Vassar Drops Season-Ending Twinbill

ROCHESTER, NY – The Vassar College baseball team concluded its 2019 season with a doubleheader against RIT on Sunday.  After dropping the opener by a 13-7 count, the Brewers (14-24, 7-17 Liberty) suffered a 19-14 loss to the Tigers (19-13, 13-5 Liberty) in game two at Monroe Community College's Tribune Field.

RIT scored four runs in the second inning of game one, but the Brewers immediately responded with a four-spot of their own.  Matt Schwartz (Dix Hills, NY) started the rally with a two-run double.  Ty Langford (Tujunga, CA) then bunted in a run before Daniel Bonfiglio's (New York, NY) RBI single tied the game.  Vassar took the lead when Schwartz lifted a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third.

However, the Tigers went back in front with four runs in the fourth.  Daniel Capra delivered the big blow in the inning with a three-run homer.  He then roped a two-run single in the fifth to make it 10-5.  After RIT added three more in the top of the sixth, Jason Salerno's (Dix Hills, NY) two-run double in the bottom half of the inning capped the scoring, as the Tigers notched a 13-7 victory.

Evan Trausch (San Diego, CA) had three hits for the Brewers, and Bonfiglio finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Schwartz finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs, while Salerno drove in a pair and Jesse Mulham (Syosset, NY) scored twice.  Bryan Rubin (Bryn Mawr, PA) (0-2) got the start on the mound and took the loss.  He surrendered eight runs (four earned) on three hits, walked four and struck out one in 3.1 innings.

For the Tigers, Capra was 2-for-5 with five RBIS, while Navada Waterman ended up 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs.  Kyle Watson and Ian Libby each scored three times, with Patrick Mylott and Kyle Terzini added two runs apiece.  Starting pitcher Daniel Zeglen (2-0) lasted six innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Game two was tied at 1-1 when Connor Levchuck (Greenlawn, NY) crushed a three-run homer to left in the bottom of the fourth.  After RIT tied it on Zeglen's three-run homer in the fifth, the Tigers added three more to make it 7-4.  RIT increased its advantage to 9-4 on Terzini's two-run double in the sixth, but the Brewers responded with a three-spot in the bottom half of the inning.  Schwartz knocked in a run on a groundout and Levchuck delivered an RBI double before a Bonfiglio sacrifice fly brought Vassar within 9-7.

After the Tigers scored nine runs in the top of the seventh, Vassar chipped away at the deficit.  Taylor Smach (Manlius, NY) crushed a two-run homer to left center in the seventh, and Bonfiglio drove in a run on an eighth-inning infield single.  RIT picked up an insurance tally in the top of the ninth, but the Brewers refused to go quietly, plating four runs in the bottom of the ninth.  Rubin ripped a two-run single, while Matt Martino (Hauppauge, NY) and Mulham each smacked an RBI single before RIT closed out the 19-14 win.

Levchuck went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and four runs scored from the nine-spot in the batting order.  Brent Shimoda (Aiea, HI) crossed the plate three times, while Smach finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs in his final collegiate game.  Bonfiglio, Rubin and Schwartz each drove in a pair of runs, and Alex Hartnett (Miami, FL) scored twice.  Max Spencer (San Diego, CA) (1-4) took the loss after yielding seven runs on 13 hits with six strikeouts and a walk in 4.2 innings.

Every RIT starter had at least one hit and one RBI, as the Tigers belted 27 hits in the contest.  Waterman and Patrick Mylott led RIT with four hits apiece.  Zeglen was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs, while Patrick Blackall scored four times.  Collin Reformat (3-1) held the Brewers to four runs and three hits in five innings.  He struck out four and walked four.

Sunday's doubleheader marked the final career games for Vassar seniors Hartnett, Mulham, Rubin, Schwartz, Smach, Joe Conti (Bloomingburg, NY) and Jake Doyle (Seaford, NY).
