POUGHKEEPSIE, NY- In its first game against Hudson River rival since 2017, the Vassar College baseball team recorded 11 hits crushing the SUNY New Paltz Hawks 14-4 in nine innings, Wednesday afternoon inside Prentiss Field.
The Brewers did not face the Hawks during their 2018 campaign and last fell to New Paltz 4-3 on April 26, 2017.
Zach Magee (Indianapolis, IN) notched his third win on the 2019 season going for four innings, advancing the Brewers to a 14-20 record.
New Paltz striked first, scoring a run in the first inning of the game. Vassar closed the first inning with one runner on base. At the top of the second inning, the Hawks recorded one hit on a ground ball before two consecutive outs.
Evan Trausch (San Diego, CA) led off for the Brewers in the bottom of the second inning, grounding out to the Hawk's shortstop. Next at bat, Jesse Mulham (Syosset, NY) was walked, before Matt Schwartz (Dix Hills, NY) singled to the shortstop and Gunnar Wildercrantz (Selden, NY) was walked.
Bases loaded, Alex Harnett (Miami, FL) singled to left field advancing Wildercrantz, Schwartz and Mulham, and securing the Brewers first run. A single from Brent Shimoda (Aiea, HI) allowed Schawartz to cross the plate.
With only one out and runners on every base, Bryan Rubin (Bryn Pawr, PA) was walked followed by a Matt Martino (Hauppage, NY) single and a Taylor Smach (Manlius, NY) hit to left field and the Brewers were up 6-1.
Smach got tagged out at second for the second out of the half inning, though a Trausch double to center field allowed Martino to head home. Intentionally walked for the second time this inning, Mulham headed to first base, Trausch still on second. A triple from Schwartz to centerfield and Trausch scored the Brewer's ninth run. The inning ended on a pop-up to first base.
The Hawks found an offensive edge in their next at bat, adding three more runs. New Paltz would not score again in the contest.
Winning 9-4, the Brewers extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Smach on second and Martino on third, a fly out to center field from Mulham opened the lane for Martino to score. Schwartz was walked, with Smach on third, putting runners on first and third. A Wildercrantz triple to right center sent both runners across the plate.
Mulham and Wildercrantz secured two more RBIs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Wildercrantz got a team high 3 RBIs while Mulham, Schwartz and Smach all had two.
Joe Conti (Bloomingburg, NY) and Max Spencer (San Diego, CA) registered two innings on the mount preceding Rubin closing out the game.
The Brewers return to the field on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m. as they face Liberty League Conference opponent RIT in a double header starting at 1 p.m. in Rochester, N.Y.
