PITTSFORD, NY- The Vassar College men's volleyball game dropped both games at the St. John Fisher Tri-Match Saturday afternoon. The Brewers lost in 4 to host and United Volleyball Conference opponent St. John Fisher College (21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22) before falling to non-conference foe Daemon College in three sets (24-26, 21-25, 25-16).
Â
In the first set of the day, the Brewers found themselves trailing 12-15. Vassar took a timeout and looked to put the pressure on St. John Fisher and lessen the advantage. A service ace from Jefferson Waters (Hummelstown, PA) served as an equalizer at 19. Though a 6-2 run for St. John Fisher would close out the set.
Â
The Brewers sided out in the second set. Tied at 11, the Cardinals went on a 3-point run, triggering a Vassar time out. Upon returning to the court, St. John Fisher's offensive added two more points. Up 19-13, a Cardinals service error allowed the Brewers to go on their own 4-point run featuring kills from Joe Hendrickson (Feeding Hills, MA), Jake Kaplan (Leesburg, VA) and Waters all from Garth Verdeflor (Lake Mary, FL). Still down, another St. John Fisher error opened the court for Vassar who went on a 4-point run to win the set off a kill from Kevin Ros (Bridgewater, NJ).
Â
Despite finding a rhythm in the second set, the Brewers dropped the third and fourth sets.
Â
Looking to bounce back from losing their first match the Brewers opened play against Daemon College. The Wildcats jumped to an early lead, 8-5. Down 17-12, Vassar went on a 4-1 run with kills from Yoni Auerbach (East Brunswick, NJ), Ryan Duchemin (Maitland, FL) and Kaplan. Though the deficit was too large for the Brewers to come back from.
Â
A 6-point run gave Daemon a 13-3 lead over Vassar. Andrew Halberg (Newark, DE) and Noah Hoppenjans (Edmond, OK) entered the match for the Brewers and ignited a 4-1 run, though the Wildcats maintained the lead. Steadfast at 11, the Brewers found three straight point on Wildcat's errors. However, Daemon easily closed out the set.
Â
The third set was the closest of the match. The set opened with the teams trading the lead, staying within two points. With the score set 11-10 and Vassar trailing by one, Daemon found its rhythm and went on an 8-2 point run interrupted by two Duchemin kills. A Vassar timeout and the Brewers attempted to side out, though the Wildcats offensive momentum lingered and they won the match.
Â
The Brewers recorded 74 kills on the day, with Ros leading the team contributing 20. Â
Â
Vassar is back on the court Wednesday, April 3 at 7 p.m. as they host United Volleyball Conference rival New York University.
