Volleyball Picks Up 3-0 Conference Win

ELMIRA, NY- Breaking its two game losing streak, the Vassar College men's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 27-25) win over United Volleyball Conference adversary, the Elmira College Soaring Eagles Friday night.

Kevin Ros (Bridgewater, NJ) and Jake Kaplan (Leesburg, VA) lead the Brewers offensively with 10 kills each while Jefferson Waters (Hummelstown, PA) connected with seven. Ros, Kaplan and Waters accounted for 27 of the 41 total kills on the day.

Kaplan and Waters also earned two services aces to Ros's one.

Joe Hendrickson (Feeding Hills, MA) had six blocks and Daniel Halberg (Newark, DE) passed 21 assists.

Additionally George Diehl (St. Louis, MO) hit the floor for 11 digs.

The match started slow. With the score tied at 14, an attacking error from Elmira paired with a kill from Ros and a kill from Yoni Auerbach (East Brunswick, NJ) gave Vassar a 3-point advantage, forcing a Soaring Eagle timeout. Upon returning to the court, the Brewers went on a 3-1 run featuring a Ryan Duchemin kill (Maitland, FL) and inflicting another Elmira timeout. Up by six, Vassar maintained its offensive edge and closed out the set on a Ros kill.

Up 9-8 in set two, the Brewers scored four straight points on two Soaring Eagles errors and kills from Hendrickson and Waters. Two Vassar subs and the game ties at 16, Vassar and Elmira found themselves trading the lead. An attacking error from Elmira combined with a Waters service ace and Vassar led by one, the score set at 24-23. Elmira would connect with another kill before Noah Hoppenjans (Edmond, OK) would successfully feed Auerbach two kills to end the set.

The final set of the game was the closest set. Vassar opened with a 5-2 lead though Elmira would side out and tie the game at 6 before going on a 4-1 run and taking the lead for the first time in the set. The Brewers and the Soaring Eagles would exchange runs and the lead. With the score 25-all, a kill from Ros followed by a Hendrickson kill finished the match.

With the win, the Brewers move to a record of 12-10 on the 2018-2019 campaign.

Vassar returns to the court tomorrow in Pittsford, NY as they face conference foe St. John Fisher at 1 p.m. and non-conference opponent Daemon College at 3 p.m.
