POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – On Sunday at Walker Field House, the Vassar College women's tennis team faced Wellesley in the Seven Sisters Championship final for the 16
th consecutive year.
Tara Edwards (Littleton, CO) and
Morgane Flournoy (Grosse Pointe, MI) were named to the All-Tournament Team after earning a victory at No. 1 doubles, but that would prove to be the only match win for the No. 29 Brewers (5-3), as the No. 35 Blue (4-0) captured their first Seven Sisters title since 2014 with a 4-1 triumph.
Edwards and Flournoy won the first set against Selina Pang and Libby Chang before dropping the second in a tiebreaker. However, the Vassar duo rebounded to take the third set, 10-3, and claim a 6-2, 6-7, 10-3 triumph. That triumph pulled the Brewers within 2-1 after Wellesley had posted wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 3 singles.
In the No. 2 doubles match, Lily Chu and Cinji Lee defeated
Cara Kizilbash (Pensacola, FL) and
Vista Grinde (Virginia Beach, VA) by a 6-4, 6-3 count. Meanwhile, in a three-set battle at No. 3 singles, Michelle Shen notched a 6-4, 3-6, 12-10 win over
Melina Stavropoulos (Atherton, CA).
That meant the championship would be decided by the last two matches on court—No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Michaela Markwart clinched the victory for Wellesley with a 6-3, 6-4 win over
Sarra Yekta (Las Vegas, NV) at No. 2 singles.
At No. 1 singles,
Frances Cornwall (Poway, CA) and Justine Huang engaged in a three-set struggle. Cornwall won the first set and served for the match in the second, but Huang rallied to take the set in a tiebreak. The third set super tiebreak went back-and-forth before Huang converted a match point opportunity at 9-8 to secure a 3-6, 7-6, 10-8 victory.
Earlier in the day, Vassar topped Mount Holyoke (3-2) by a 5-0 count, winning all five matches in straight sets.
Cornwall registered a 6-0, 7-5 triumph over Ayame Yazawa at No. 1 singles, while Yekta defeated Ching-Ching Huang 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 2 position and Stavropoulos earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Clara Wang in the No. 3 spot. At No. 1 doubles, Edwards and Flournoy registered a 6-1, 6-0 win over Catherine Peabody and Anya Gerasimova. Kizilbash and Grinde completed the sweep by knocking off Joy Maran and Annissa Aamoun 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2 doubles match.
The Brewers are now off until March 10, when they begin their Spring Break trip to Southern California with a matchup against Bowdoin (0-1).
