ROME, GA (October 18, 2019) - Freshman
Miriam Gandham concluded her first experience at the ITA Cup in fine fashion on Friday, earning a victory on her final day. The 2019 event was held at the Rome Tennis Complex on the campus of Berry College. With her victory, Gandham became the first player in Vassar women's tennis program history to win more than one match at the ITA Cup.
In program history, three singles players and two doubles pairs have previously represented the Burgundy and Grey at the prestigious event.
Gandham (Ann Arbor, MI) won a tough match against sophomore Nicole Semenov from the University of Chicago. After dropping the first set, she roared back and won 6-4, 6-3.
"We're very proud of the way Miriam competed throughout today's match and the tournament," said head coach
Kathy Campbell. "The experience gained from play in such a highly competitive tournament is invaluable for her continued development."
Gandham opened the ITA Cup action on Thursday, opened the day with a tough 7-6, 7-4 loss to Whitman's Andei Fukushige. Both players moved the ball incredibly well during the match and Gandham had a set point opportunity in the first, but her opponent countered very well against her offense to earn the victory.
The second match of the day saw Gandham face Gustavos Adolphus's Ginger Valentine. Utilizing solid offense and steadiness against another quick opponent, she earned the 6-4, 6-4 victory.
"We are incredibly proud of her determination and grit," said head coach
Kathy Campbell. "Miriam stayed focused and composed, playing tough in both matches against opponents who are so good."
The Vassar tennis team is now idle until the spring season.
