Baseball Leaps Past Lehman Twice For Non-Conference Sweep

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 22, 2018) -- The Vassar baseball team jumped back over .500 for the season Sunday afternoon from Prentiss Field, taking both ends of a non-conference doubleheader with Lehman College with scores of 9-4 and 9-1.

Game 1 - Vassar 9, Lehman 4
Freshman Evan Trausch had three hits and three RBI, while junior catcher Jake Doyle also had three hits in four at-bats to push the Brewers past the Lightning in game on. Vassar started out fast with two runs in the bottom of the first, as Trausch singled in two on a single to left field.

Lehman responded with two in the second, but VC explosed for three in the bottom half, as senior Eric Strickland tripled in two, scoring a batter later on on a single by Doyle. VC chalked up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, after plating one in the bottom half of the fourth after another triple by Strickland and single from Doyle.

That was plenty of offense for the Brewers, who got solid pitching from junior Joe Conti, freshman Logan Willans and sophomore Robert Pinataro to wrap up the win. Strickland was 2-for-3 with his two triples, which were his seventh and eighth three-baggers of his career, tying for fifth-most in program history.

Senior Bobby Kinne was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk, while freshman Matt McGannon posted a 1-for-3 day with a double. Conti went 4.1 innings on the mound for VC, allowing six hits and two earned runs while punching out six Lightning hitters. Willans worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, and Pinataro struck out the side in his seventh inning appearance.

Game 2 - Vassar 9, Lehman 1
Sophomore Mitchell Mullock went six innings strong, allowing nine hits and no earned runs, and junior Matt Schwartz exploded with a 3-for-3, four RBI contest to lead the Brewers to the sweep. Vassar pushed across three in each of the first two innings, with the opening frame being punctuated with a two-run single by sophomore Daniel Bonfiglio

In the second inning, freshman Tanner Blough singled, and after a hit by pitch to Kinne, Schwartz hammered a triple to right center to plate both runners. Schwartz would come around on an error to put the Brewers up 6-1.

Things settled down from that point for both teams until the sixth inning, when freshman Elliott Layne posted a sacrifice fly to score Blough, while Schwartz followed with a RBI single to right center to score Kinne. In the bottom of the eighth, Layne but a bow on the scoring for Vassar, hammered a 1-1 pitch way over the left-center wall to finish the scoring. It was Layne's second homer of the season.

Bonfiglio finished 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Brewers, doubling once, while Layne was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Mullock handed the ball to Vassar lefty Max Spencer, who worked two scoreless innings of relief, striking out two, and junior Bryan Rubin also allowed no runs in his lone inning.

Vassar will have a quick turnaround, hosting Mount Saint Vincent College Tuesday, April 24 at 4 p.m. on Prentiss Field.
