POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 24, 2018) – The Vassar baseball team picked up a 6-4 non-conference win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday afternoon on Prentiss Field, improving their overall record to 15-13.
The Vassar bats put up three runs in both the first and the third innings to grab control of the game.
Jason Salerno,
Bryan Rubin, and
Matt Schwartz drove in two runs apiece to pace the offense. While
Jake Silver earned his first win on the mound.
In the bottom of the first, the Brewers put up three quick runs. With
Matt Hernandez and
Bobby Kinne on base, Salerno blasted a triple to left field to plate the two runners. Next up, Schwartz grounded out to the shortstop allowing Salerno to score from third.
The Dolphins picked up one run in the top of third as the leadoff man, Matt DiNorcia, hit a hard fly ball to left field and reached third on an error. Emanuel Giumara then stepped up to hit a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed DiNorcia to get home and score.
Vassar was back at it in the third inning, scoring three more runs to extend their lead to 6-1.
Taylor Smach used some smart base running to score the first Brewer run. After being hit by a pitch, he advanced to second on a Kinne single and then to third on a Salerno fly out. Schwartz was the man to bring Smach home off a sac fly. Then with Kinne on base, Rubin sent his second pitch over the left field wall for his first home run of the season.
Mount St. Vincent put two more runs on the board in the fifth inning. After a double by Matt Albert, a Guimarra single brought him home. Then Ross Bartziokas singled to right field to drive in the second run of the inning.
The scoring slowed down after that as the Brewer pitching and defense held the Dolphins off the board. But in the top of the ninth inning, Mount St. Vincent made it interesting loading the bases and getting one runner across. Connor Levchuk made an outstanding play for the first out of the inning as he tracked a ball deep into left field to catch it with the tip of his glove. The left fielder then got the ball in to double up the runner on third.
John Madsen earned his second save of the year striking out the final batter of the game.
Vassar takes the field again on Wednesday, hosting SUNY New Paltz at 4:00 p.m. in their final non-conference game of the season.
