Vassar Men's Lacrosse Notes - Montclair State

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 27, 2018) - The Vassar College men's lacrosse team will go on the road for the first time this season as they travel to Montclair State to play the Red Hawks.

Last Time Out: 
The Vassar men's lacrosse team used a strong second quarter to distance themselves from Drew University en route to a 12-7 season opening win on Weinberg Field. The game was tied 2-2 after the first quarter where Matthew Lowery and Dekker Stebel each tallied a goal. But in the second frame, the Brewers put up five to the Rangers' one to open a 7-3 at the half. Austin MelloJames Thomas, and Michael Mullen scored three straight to open the second frame. While Joseph Bradley and Mullen's second score of the day closed out the half. Vassar stayed strong in the second half outscoring Drew 5-4 over the final two quarters. Matt Boyd started and played all 60 minutes in the cage for Vassar. He logged seven saves to go along with the first win of the season.
 

A Look At The Brewers (1-0, 0-0 Liberty League):
  • Vassar saw seven players tally at least one goal in their first game of the season.
  • Freshmen, Joseph Bradley and Tomás Meade, tallied their first collegiate goals in the game against Drew University.
  • Two players, Michael Mullen and Dekker Stebel, each recorded a hat trick for the Brewers.
  • Mullen's performance against Drew earned him Liberty League Offensive Player of the Week.
  • Mullen is VC's leading returning scorer, recording 24 goals and 15 assists in 2017.
  • Defensively, the Brewers were led by freshman Stefan Fleps, who caused three turnovers and scooped up two ground balls, earning a Rookie of the Week title.
  • Junior Matt Boyd logged seven saves against Drew, making his save percentage .500.
  • The Brewers are looking for their first win against Montclair State (0-4). The two did not meet in 2017.
 
 
A Look At The Red Hawks (0-1, 0-0 NJAC):
  • Senior Brady Wulster opened his final campaign with a bang, scoring four times in the season opener.
  • Junior Matt Haemmerle added two goals on the day as well.
  • Wulster and Haemmerle were the Red Hawks two leading scorers in the 2017 season, combining for 91 goals.
  • The Red Hawks will look to improve their defense, outscored 25-8 by No. 14 Dickinson last weekend.
  • Montclair State brought in 21 new competitors this season, joined by 10 sophomores, 12 juniors, and just 5 seniors.
  • Freshman Matthew McLaren spent 25 minutes in the goal in his debut. He is joined by junior Jack Cardew who saw 177 minutes in the goal last season.
  • Just six Red Hawks don't call New Jersey home.
 
Against Montclair All-Time: The Brewers are 0-4 against Montclair State all-time. The Brewers and Red Hawks matched four years in a row from 2013-16. Most recently the two sides faced on March 3, 2016 at Montclair when the Red Hawks claimed an 11-7 win.
