Last Time Out: The Brewers posted a solid 2-2 record at the Red Dragon Classic. Junior
Devan Gallagher led the squad, posting 84 kills, 47 digs and three double-doubles in the four contests. The opening weekend began with a 15-13 nail-biting five set victory over Lebanon Valley.
A Look At The Brewers (2-2):
- The Brewers fought hard all weekend, keeping almost sets within 5 points, many determined by just two points.
- The squad welcomes the return of senior hitter Bria Corham this week. She has not yet seen the court this fall. Corham adds flexibility, experience, and a fiery calm persona to the Brewer lineup.
- Junior setter Annie MacMillan worked hard to spread the ball around, evidenced by all five hitters posting at least 13 kills, combining for an impressive team hitting percentage of .241.
- MacMillan set 153 helpers on the weekend, good for 10.93 assists/set.
- Middles Colette Cambey and Jenny Kerbs posted a solid start to their sophomore campaign, combining for 32 kills and 17 total blocks on the weekend.
- Also widespread, six Brewers posted at least 30 digs on the weekend, led by Devan Gallagher and rookie defender Anna Zucchero with 47 and 45 respectively.
- Strong and steady from the service line, the Brewers averaged 2.5 aces/set on the weekend, led by Anna Zucchero and Lauren Ninkovich.
- Seniors Bria Corham and Sophia Tiajoloff, as well as returning captain Annie MacMillan will take on the captain duties for the Brewers this season.
- The squad is led by Jonathan Penn and Joe Torella. Penn is entering his 22nd season with the Brewers. Last season the coaching duo earned Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year accolades.
A Look At The Ephs (0-0):
- Williams volleyball has not yet taken the court this fall, as Vassar will be their first contest of the 2017 season.
- Interestingly enough, the squad has no seniors. The 14-women roster is made up of five juniors, four sophomores, and five freshmen.
- Junior hitters Ally Ostrow and Roxi Corbell will return as important offensive weapons. Last season Ostrow's performance earned her an All-NESCAC selection. Ostrow posted 215 kills and 323 digs in her 2016 campaign.
- Fellow juniors, Tess Richman and Mia Weinland return to the court this season, both of whom suffered from season-ending injuries in 2016.
- The squad continues its tradition of geographic diversity, without a Massachusetts member.
- Last season, the Ephs finished 13-11 overall, 6-4 in conference.
- The Ephs are led by coaches Christi Kelsey and Cailyn Straubel. 2017 will be Kelsey's ninth season as the programs head coach.
Against Williams All-Time: The Brewers are just 5-20 against Williams all time, their last victory in 2011. Last year, the two squads matched up in a grueling dual, Williams edging the Brewers in the 5
th set. No current Brewer has beat an Eph in a Vassar uniform.
Up Next: Vassar will head up the hill to the AFC to host the annual Vassar Invitational. Action is slated to begin at 4 p.m. Friday against King's College. The Brewers will then take on the Mavericks of Medaille College at 8 p.m. Saturday, the squad takes on University of New England and Bates College at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. respectively. Live stats and video will be available.
