POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 17, 2017) – The Vassar College women's tennis team played host to the second day of action in the 2017 Vassar Scramble, hosted on Josselyn Tennis Courts Sunday afternoon on a pleasant, sunny day.
The Brewers, who continued to play without
Dasha Ivenitsky,
Kate Christensen,
Ashley Fair and
Frances Cornwall due to a sickness plaguing the team, still had a solid showing over the one round of singles and two doubles rounds.
In the opening round, freshman
Rachael Hahn was strong in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Pamela Fuks of New Paltz. During the match, Hahn used an effective ground stroke game to keep Fuks off balance. Fellow freshman
Meghan Rodick used her great anticipation and athleticism to frustrate Carol Tyson of New Paltz, earning a 6-0, 6-0 win in her opening match of the day.
Sophomore
Tara Edwards followed with a nice win on Court No. 1, as she knocked off Stephanie Simon of Connecticut College 6-2, 6-0. Edwards used her forehand well during the match, finishing points at a high rate for the win. Senior
Lauren DiFazio battled well in her match against Anandini Chawla of New York University, but was outlasted 6-4, 6-3 on Court No. 6.
In doubles action, Edwards and Rodick knocked off Mariah Warren and Simon 8-1, while freshman
Sarra Yekta and sophomore
Vista Grinde earned an 8-2 triumph. In other round 2 doubles, Hahn and senior
Courtney Geiss battled but would drop an 8-4 decision to Rachel Weiss and Meredith Kenny of Connecticut College.
In the final round of action, Edwards teamed with Yekta to top the New Paltz duo of Emi Lewis and Courtney Koran 8-0. Yekta's net game, along with Edwards's ground strokes were a perfect combo, as the duo each earned their third doubles' win of the year.
In the second to last match of the day, Grinde and Geiss rallied from a 4-3 deficit to earn an 8-5 win over Paige Braitewaite and Alexandra Waldman, as
Grinde powered home the winning volley to claim the victory.
"I thought we did really well as a team at staying focused and playing hard even though we were battling some injuries," said Edwards. "I think our teammates did a really great job of keeping us up and supporting us so that really helps us get through our long matches."
Vassar will have a few days off before heading to Saratoga Springs, NY for the 2017 ITA Regionals, hosted by Skidmore College Friday, September 22 through Sunday, September 24.
