POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 16, 2017) – The Vassar College women's tennis team hosted the first of two days of the Vassar Scramble on Saturday afternoon, hosting Connecticut College and New York University in play from Josselyn Tennis Courts.
In singles action, freshman
Meghan Rodick started her day with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Stephanie Simon of Connecticut College. Sophomore
Tara Edwards defeated Warren earlier in the day 6-3, 6-2, but also would fall in her second match of the afternoon to Flyora Shiyanova of NYU in one of the few three-setters Saturday, 3-6, 6-3, and 10-5.
Senior
Courtney Geiss dropped her first match of the day to Anna Maria Buraya in straight set, but rebounded to earn a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mariah Warren from Connecticut College. Sophomore
Vista Grinde dropped her first match Saturday to Coco Kulle, but went 1-1 after a 6-2, 6-0 win over Meredith Kenny of CC.
Freshman
Sarra Yekta dropped her opening set of the day 6-2, but rallied for an exciting 2-6, 6-1 and 10-5 three-set victory. Yekta would also pick up her second match of the afternoon, earning a 6-2 victory in the first set while picking up the second set 7-6 with a 7-5 win in the tie-breaker. Fellow newcomer
Rachael Hahn was 1-1 on the day, as she rebounded from a Round 1 loss to knock of Paige Braitewaite in three sets 5-7, 6-4, 10-8.
In doubles play, Geiss teamed with Rodick to defeat Aleksandra Drjaca and Warren of Connecticut College 8-3. Grinde added another victory, partnering with senior
Lauren DiFazio to knock off Braitewaite and Alexandra Waldman 9-8, earning the tie-breaker 7-4.
Vassar was down four players on Saturday, as seniors
Dasha Ivenitsky and
Kate Christensen, along with freshman
Frances Cornwall and sophomore
Ashley Fair were unable to compete due to sickness.
The Brewers will conclude action in the Vassar Scramble Sunday morning at 9 a.m. in action from Josselyn Tennis Courts.
