Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Runs Past Western Connecticut State Wednesday Evening

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 13, 2017) – The Vassar College field hockey team continued its goal binge of late, tallying 11 times Wednesday evening to earn an 11-1 non-conference victory over Western Connecticut State University in action from Weinberg Field.

Eight different Brewer players tallied on Wednesday evening, as Vassar scored the most goals in a game since potting 11 back on October 5, 2013 against Morrisville State on the road. The 11 scores were also the most in a home game in program history, eclipsing the nine scored last year against Brockport.

Vassar (4-1) got on the board just before the nine-minute mark of the game, as junior Mikayla Young swept in a loose ball after a penalty corner and saved shot by sophomore Cristina Lopez. The Brewers doubled their lead in the 14th minute, as Lopez had a shot off a corner deflect up and over the Colonial keeper for her second score of the season.

Exactly two minutes later, junior Emily Poehlein registered her first of two scores on Wednesday evening, backhanding a pass from Lopez into the right top corner of the cage to put VC up 3-0. Vassar kept the pressure on, putting its fourth score into the cage in the 30th minute, as junior Megan Caveny tallied her sixth goal of the year on a backhand shot through the keeper's legs.

Just before halftime, the Brewers tallied for the fifth time in the opening 35 minutes, as freshman Grace Amell posted her first collegiate goal, knocking in a loose ball with 44 seconds to play in the opening stanza. After the break, the goals continued to come for Vassar, with senior Storm Sideleau notching her first of the night, turning and firing in a pass in front from Alyssa More.

In the 48th minute, Vassar got its seventh of the night, as Haley Cubell chipped in a shot off a Colonial defender for her third of the season. Just over a minute later, Poehlein scored on an assist from sophomore Sam Plante, one-timing in a pass across the front of the goal mouth for the tally.

Freshman Niki Rizzo would post the first of her two goals on the evening at 54:03 of the game, as she sent a shot from eight yards in front of goal past the goalkeeper for the score. Just 11 seconds later, Rizzo one-timed in a pass from fellow freshman Dara Studnitzer for another goal to make the score 10-0.

The final goal of the game came with just over a minute and a half to play, as Sideleau made a dazzling run through the WCSU (2-3) defense, beating the keeper for the sparkling finishing touch for the Brewer offense. The Colonials got on the board with 29 seconds left on a Carly Matasavage tally, but it was Vassar's night in the end.

The Brewers outshot Western Connecticut State 29-7, but score on an astounding 50 percent of the shots put on cage. Sophomore Liz Rotolo made two stops in net in 23:35 minutes of action, while junior Paige Amico also finished with 40:30 in goal for VC, making one stop. Six of Vassar's 11 goals were assisted on.

Vassar picked up an 11-1 penalty corner edge on the night, as the 17 goals over two games was a program record for a two-game stretch. "I was very impressed with the players doing what they were supposed to do," said head coach Michael Warari. "They were in the right positions in the right lanes, what can you ask when they're doing what we're supposed to be doing."

"I thought today was a really great show of how much depth we have on our team," said Sideleau. "We have been doing a really good job with position and with discipline and that has been giving us really good results," said Sideleau, who moved into No. 10 all-time at Vassar in points with 45.

Vassar will look to continue its hot play on Saturday, hosting Ramapo College at 1 p.m. for a matinee start on Weinberg Field.
