Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Continues Roll With 5-0 Win Over Ramapo

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 16, 2017) – Junior forward Megan Caveny scored two goals Saturday to lead the Vassar College field hockey team, as the Brewers won their third straight by knocking off Ramapo College 5-0 in non-conference play from Weinberg Field.

On a hot and muggy day in Poughkeepsie, the Brewer offensive attack stayed just as hot scoring two goals in the opening half and three more in the second period. Vassar outshot its opponents on the afternoon 39-5, earning a 21-4 edge in penalty corners. The 21 penalty corners were tied for the fourth-most in a game behind the 26 against Hartwick two seasons ago.

The Brewers would have gotten on the board earlier if it wouldn't have been for the solid play from Ramapo keeper Emily Wisneski. The senior backstop made five saves in the opening five minutes of the game to keep the game scoreless. The Roadrunners (2-4) nearly opened the scoring though in the eighth minute, but two point-blank shots were saved by sophomore Liz Rotolo and defender Monica Feeley.

A minute and a half after the Ramapo flurry, Vassar would push the ball back up the field, getting on the scoreboard thanks to a goal by sophomore Cristina Lopez, who deflected in a penalty corner shot from Caveny.

Vassar nearly doubled its advantage with 11:39 on the clock, as sophomore Stephanie Palma tipped a shot in from Rylie Pope but it clanged off the post. In the 22nd minute, junior Alyssa More was denied by defender Victoria Ewanis, saving the shot off the line. Vassar's second goal would finally come in the 25th minute, as freshman Dara Studnitzer was rewarded for her persistence as she knocked in her third straight shot for her first collegiate tally.

After the intermission, Caveny tallied her first of two goals on the day on a penalty corner at 46:31, dribbling through the circle off a corner and beating Wisneski to make the score 3-0. The VC lead would swell to four goals at 50:40 of the contest, as junior Emily Poehlein scored for the third straight game with her fourth of the season, taking a pass from junior Haley Cubell before turning and firing past the keeper's pads.

With less than two minutes to go, Caveny earned her brace as she deflected a pass from sophomore Sam Plante past back-up keeper Samantha Stolker to end the scoring. Caveny led all players with 10 shots on the day, while Poehlein also had six attempts on cage off the bench. Caveny now sits in second-place in the Liberty League in goals with eight, and is just one behind her season-best total of nine which was set last year.

Vassar keepers combined to keep the Roadrunners off the board on Saturday, as Rotolo finished with two saves while playing 37:11 minutes of action. Junior Paige Amico also played 32:49 in net in assisting to VC's third shutout of the season.

Wisneski finished with 18 saves for the Roadrunners, while Ewanis posted two shots to lead the way for RCNJ. Defenders Stacey Faria also added a defensive stop for Ramapo.

The Brewers will continue play against New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) teams Wednesday at 7 p.m., taking on No. 8 Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ.
