POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 2, 2017) – The Vassar College baseball team scored seven early runs and held on late to earn a mid-week victory over Manhattanville College in non-conference action from Prentiss Field Tuesday afternoon.
The Brewers got on the board early in the game, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, as senior started the rally with a one-out double to left center. Shanagher stole third, and the resulting throw went into left field to allow Shanagher to scamper home. VC added another run in the frame on a RBI single from
Bryan Rubin.
VC doubled its lead in the bottom of the second run, as freshman
Matt Martino grounded a ball to third base and the throw from the Manhattanville third baseman went up the right-field line, which allowed two runners to score. The Brewers extended their lead to 7-0 in the bottom third, as junior
Matt Hernandez flared a single into short right field with two outs, clearing the bases with one swing.
Manhattanville got back into the game with four runs in the top of the fourth and two more in the fifth to make the game 7-6, but Vassar tacked on two more runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to retake a 9-6 lead. In the frame, freshman
Evan Trausch singled to start the inning and was scored the next batter by a ringing triple from
Bobby Kinne to right-center.
Two batters later, Kinne would come across the plate on a single by
Taylor Smach to put the Brewers up by three. The Valiants didn't go away, as the visitors made the score 9-7 in the seventh, getting to within one in the ninth. In the closing inning, Manhattanville put the first two runners on and sophomore
Jake Doyle came on in relief. Doyle worked around a second and third, no-out jam with a fly ball, strikeout and another fly ball to earn his first career save.

Chris Lee added a multi-hit affair with two singles and a run scored.
The staff day was in effect for the Brewers, and Rubin got the win on the mound despite only going three innings, allowing just one hit and one walk to move to 3-1 on the year. Sophomore
Matt Schwartz tossed a scoreless inning for VC, while
Robert Winkelmann had a game to remember, as we allowed no runs and two hits and posted his first career base hit in the bottom of the eighth as well. In all, Vassar used nine pitchers over the 3 hour, 33 minute game, as Brewer hurlers threw 194 pitches total.
John Cirillo had two hits for the Valiants (17-19), and Robbie Lynch and Luke Tebolt each scored a pair of runs for the visitors. Vassar will now head to Canton, NY this weekend for a four-game series with St. Lawrence University with huge Liberty League Tournament playoff implications.
