Box Score BOCA RATON, FL (March 14, 2017) — The Vassar College men's lacrosse team (4-1) took its first loss of the season, falling 11-4 to Wesleyan University (3-1) on the campus of Lynn University in Boca Raton, FL on Tuesday.
The Brewers' four straight wins to open the season mark the best streak of any kind in program history.
Pat Gibbons led the Brewers offensively with two points on a score and an assist. Michael Mullen, Brandon DeStasio and Chris Billups potted one goal apiece, and Liam Moriarty dished out an assist. DeStasio also stood out defensively, adding four ground balls and a created turnover to his stat line.
Matt Boyd took the loss for VC, making five saves in the first half before Erik Mikelinich took over to make four stops in the second. Meanwhile, Ted Bergman earned the win for Wesleyan, making 12 saves over the full time, as the Brewers outshot the Cardinals 29-27.
Carter Hawthorne logged seven points on two goals and five helpers; Harry Stanton secured six points on five scores and an assist; and Taylor Ghesquiere added a hat trick to round out Wesleyan's offensive leaders.
Mullen struck first with a score from Moriarty, but Wesleyan strung together four straight goals over the first and second quarters, with Hawthorne and Ghesquiere leading the charge with two scores apiece, 4-1.
DeStasio scored the final goal of the period to cut Wesleyan's lead in half going into intermission, 4-2.
The Cardinals outscored the Brewers 5-2 in the third quarter. Stanton notched a hat trick in the period, while Gibbons stood out for the Brewers, scoring a goal before assisting on another for Billups with 17 seconds left in the period, 9-4.
Stanton continued to pile up the goals in the final frame, netting an addition two in the period.
The Brewers are back in action, facing Salve Regina at the University of Tampa in Tampa, FL on Friday, March 17 at noon.
