Cimorelli Joins 1,000 Dig Club As Vassar Knocks Off Sage In Three

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 23, 2017) – Senior libero Trey Cimorelli had a historic night for the Vassar College men's volleyball team, as the third-year captain eclipsed the 1,000 dig mark for his career in a 3-0 win over The Sage Colleges in non-conference action from Kenyon Hall Thursday nights. Vassar knocked off the Gators with scores off 25-13, 25-22 and 25-18.

The accomplishment came on a night that saw Cimorelli lead all players with 11 digs, but he needed just two of those digs coming in to get to the plateau. Late in the first set and with the score 23-13, Cimorelli got to 1,000 for his career on an attack by Sage's Ryan Guyton, and the pass from the senior led straight to a kill by fellow senior Quinn Rutledge.

Cimorelli became the second player in program history with 1,000 in his career, joining Christian La Du in the exclusive category. "It's a good moment, the accumulation of a solid career," said Cimorelli. "I just want to thank all of my coaches and teammates over the past few years that have really made it possible for me."

The dig was just part of a first set for the Brewers that was tip-top, as the Brewers sided-out on 12 of the 13 serves for Sage (7-6), while hitting .722 for the set. In fact, Vassar posted kills on 13 of its 18 attacks in the set. Sophomore George Diehl posted four kills in the game.

The second set was much closer, as the score was tied at 14 after a block by Sage's Shane Wenz and Casey Fitzpatrick. VC (13-6) would chalk up the next four points, leading for the rest of the game before a triple block by Zechariah Lee, Christian Lizana and Diehl put an end to the second set, lifting VC to a 2-0 edge.

In the third set, Vassar controlled the game for much of the stanza, hitting .304 and siding-out at an 83 percent rate to earn the straight set victory. The win for the Brewers was their seventh in the last eight games, as the home team hit .365 for the match. Knigge finished with a team-high 12.5 points, chalking up eight kills, two aces and five total blocks. He is now just four assisted blocks shy of breaking the all-time record set by Matt Elgin.

On the outside, Rutledge added eight kills while Diehl finished with seven kills, two aces and two blocks. Lizana added six assisted blocks and six terminations, while freshman Yoni Auerbach added hit .308 while pounding down six winners. Lee continued to play well, posted 32 assists to go with three kills on five attempts, four digs and five blocks. VC posted 9.5 blocks for the match, and lead the nation currently in blocks per set.

VC hit .365 (38-11-74) for the match, adding six service aces. Sage was paced by Wenz and his match-high nine kills, while Guyton finished with six kills. Melvin Tejada also had seven digs to lead the Gators.

Vassar will have some time off before returning to the floor March 4 in Kenyon Hall at 11 a.m. for a tri-match with Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Juniata College. The match with MIT will be a United Volleyball Conference tilt, while the nightcap with Juniata will be a non-conference match-up.
