Vassar Men's Basketball Notes — RIT, Hobart

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 4, 2017) — The Vassar College men's basketball team (4-6, 0-2 Liberty) returns to Poughkeepsie for five games, beginning with a meeting versus Rochester Institute of Technology on Friday, Jan. 6 at 8 p.m. and against Hobart College the next day at 4 p.m.

Last Time Out: Vassar fell to Union College in a Liberty League matchup on the road Saturday, 89-66.  Three Brewers reached double-digit scoring, as Alex Seff logged 18 points and six rebounds, Mason Dyslin totaled 14 points and seven boards and Jesse Browne tallied 11 points on 50 percent shooting. 
 
A Look At The Brewers (4-6):
  • Following the Brewers' five-game homestand to start off the new year, they'll play at home four times thereafter during the regular season.
  • Vassar has played well in front of its home crowd, boasting a 3-1 mark.
  • The Brewers are shooting 41 percent from the floor and 34 percent from three, averaging 7.4 triples per contest.
  • The Brewers have dished out an average of 14.1 assists per game.
  • Vassar is first in the Liberty League in steals with 78, which is 14 more than the next team (Hobart, 64).
  • Three Brewers have swiped double figures in steals: Freshman Owen Murray has 19 steals under his belt, while Seff and Browne have 15 apiece.
  • Three Brewers are also averaging double-digit scoring in Seff (14.8ppg), Browne (13.7ppg) and Dyslin (12.9ppg).
  • Murray is leading the Brewers in rebounds per game (4.9) and assists per game (2.6).
  • Hunter Gettings has also been productive in his freshman campaign, as he is one of three Brewers to notch at least 10 buckets from beyond the arc, boasting a 35 shooting percentage from downtown.
 
A Look At The Tigers (6-5):
  • After enjoying their longest winning streak of the season at three games from Dec. 6 to Dec. 10, the Tigers dropped three in a row from Dec. 30 to Jan. 3, most recently falling 73-72 to University of Rochester.
  • RIT is first in the Liberty League in three-point shooting percentage (.398) and blocks (4.82bpg), and second in scoring offense (79.7ppg), field goal percentage defense (.404) and rebounding offense (39.9).
  • The Tigers have outscored opponents by an average of 79.7 points to 73.0 points.
  • RIT has shot 44 percent from the floor and 40 percent from three, while holding opponents to 41 and 35 percent, respectively.
  • The Tigers have averaged 2.2 more boards per game, 39.9 to 37.5.
  • Three Tigers are averaging double figures in the scoring column in AJ Horde (20.5ppg), Troy Pierre-Louis (11.3ppg) and Mitch Herman (11.0ppg).
  • Horde also leads RIT with 5.5 assists per game and 17 total steals.
  • Defensively, Herman paces the team with 5.6 boards per contest, while Justin Schneider has blocked a team-best 19 shots.
  • The Tigers look to build off their 2015-16 season, in which they finished 12-13 overall and 8-8 in conference play.                                                                                                                 
 
Against RIT All-Time: The Brewers are 5-6 against the Tigers all-time, dating back to their first meeting in 1990. Vassar swept last season's series with a 74-63 win in January and a 72-65 victory in February.
 
A Look At The Statesmen (5-4):
  • The Statesmen saw a four-game winning streak snap with the start of the Kwanis Classic, wherein they fell to The College of Wooster 85-72 and most recently Ohio Wesleyan University 85-63.
  • Hobart is a perfect 4-0 at home, while going 1-4 at away or neutral sites.
  • Before Hobart travels to Poughkeepsie, it will kick off conference play at Bard College on Friday at 8 p.m.
  • The Statesmen have outscored opponents by an average of two points, 70.9 to 68.9.
  • Hobart has shot 42 percent from the floor and 30 percent from downtown, while opponents have shot 40 and 31 percent, respectively.
  • The Statesmen have also outrebounded opponents by a 3.4 margin, averaging 39.6 rebounds to opponents' 36.2.
  • Three Statesmen are averaging double-digit scoring in Colin Dougherty (13.3ppg), Jamal Lucas (11.6ppg) and Tucker Lescoe (10.1ppg).
  • Dougherty also leads the team in assists per game (2.8), while adding 10 total steals.
  • Sam Allen has been the most prominent on the boards, grabbing an average of 6.1 rebounds per game.
  • The Statesmen look to improve upon last season, in which they finished 12-13 overall and 8-8 in conference play. 
 
Against Hobart All-Time: The Brewers are 4-27 against the Statesmen all-time, dating back to their first meeting in 2001. Vassar won their most recent matchup by a 75-66 decision on Feb. 5, 2016.
 
Next Up: The Brewers conclude their homestand next week, welcoming Bard College, Clarkson University and St. Lawrence University to the Athletics & Fitness Center on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, respectively.
