POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 28, 2017) — The Vassar College men's squash team (5-7) split Senior Day, 1-1, falling to Boston University 7-2 before beating University of Vermont 9-0 at the Hudson Valley Team Tournament in Kenyon Hall on Saturday.
Caden Gruber (7-5) was the only Brewers to go 2-0 on the day. He beat Adam Witaker (BU), 11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 11-2, and Emily von Weise, 11-0, 11-2, 11-2, at the six to capture his third win in a row.
Isaac Stuart (3-5) also picked up a win against BU, topping Cameron Bonhurst in five hard-fought sets, 6-11, 11-4, 9-11, 11-8, 13-11.
Many of Vassar's matches against BU were close. Vincent Mencotti (9-3) battled Marwan Sallam to five sets before falling at one, 8-11, 11-3, 12-10, 5-11, 11-9, while Viraj Nadkarni and Lucas Fifer fought their opponents to four before falling at the two and eight, respectively.
Mencotti bounced back to beat Will Vincent (UVM) in straight sets, 11-4, 11-4, 13-11, to capture his team-leading ninth win. Nadkarni (6-4) also found redemption that afternoon with an 11-2, 11-1, 11-4 win over Chris Colley (UVM) at the two. Moving down the lineup, Ankit Khosla (3-7), Samuel Hammer (1-10) and Richard Bryenton (5-7) beat their opponents in straight sets at the three through five, respectively.
Vermont was without players at the seven through nine, which resulted in default wins for Vassar.
The Brewer men face Northeastern University on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 11:30 a.m. for Day 2 of the tournament.
