Last Time Out: The Brewers lost all four of their matches out West this past weekend, but it wasn't for the lack of trying, as Vassar pushed No. 16 Southwestern University to four games on Saturday. VC followed that up by taking No. 8 Carthage College to five games in the tournament finale, dropping the last set 15-10 to narrowly miss the upset. Friday night, Vassar dropped three-set contests to Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran.
A Look At The Brewers:
- The Brewers have hit the ball pretty well so far this season, despite the four losses, chalking up a .173 clip through the opening four matches. Leading the way for VC is sophomore Devan Gallagher, who has 55 kills while averaging 3.67 per set.
- Gallagher chalked up a career-high in kills on Saturday afternoon, posting 20 against Southwestern. It was the first time a Vassar player had posted 20 or more kills since the 2014 season.
- Sophomore Annie MacMillan had a solid and productive weekend for Vassar, dishing out 141 assists including 43 against Southwestern. She equaled that total against Carthage, as both were career-highs. She leads the conference in assists per set with 9.40.
- Freshman Jane McLeod was slow out of the gate on Friday, but burst onto the scene Saturday, finishing with 35 kills in two matches. McLeod also finished with 22 terminations against Carthage, the most for a freshman since Chloe McGuire also posted 22 in 2009.
- Senior Sierra Tobin leads the team in digs thus far with 52, while he fantastic passing has been on display as well, posting just four receiving errors on 70 service attempts.
- Junior Alex Sams is hitting .204 so far with 18 kills, but also leads the team with seven service aces.
- Freshman Colette Cambey only played in one match this weekend, but she rejected five of Carthage's attacks to average a block per set.
- Five players come into Wednesday's match with 10 or more kills, including senior Gabby Miller with her 34 terminations. Miller has a current two-match double-double streak going.
- Vassar's hitting percentage after the weekend is currently second-best in the Liberty League, behind just the .176 from RIT. VC is averaging the most kills per set with 11.67.
- The five-set match against Carthage was the first five-setter for the Brewers since the 2014 season, a stretch of 58 matches.
A Look At The Ephs:
- Williams opens its season Wednesday evening, after posting an 18-11 season in 2015 while earning another trip to the NCAA Championships.
- The Ephs lost in the NCAA First Round to Ithaca College in three games, but in 2014 Williams advanced all the way to the Elite Eight round after wins against Sage, Babson and Bowdoin.
- Williams returns its two biggest hitters in Tori Jasuta and Ally Ostrow. Jasuta posted 274 kills last year, while also adding a whopping 437 digs. Ostrow, now a sophomore, had 244 terminations and 386 digs.
- The team did lose two big hitters in Katherine Lane and Catherine Egan. The pair combined for 367 kills along with 100 total blocks.
- Libero Caitie Benell finished with 365 digs last year, third-most on the squad.
- Second Team All-Region setter Ryan Farley did graduate as well, after dishing out 10.16 assists per set.
- Head coach Christi Kelsey brought in four freshmen to this year's squad, which includes a setter, two outsides and a defensive specialist.
- Williams will continue its run against Liberty League teams this weekend, taking on Union College Friday afternoon at the Union Invitational.
Against Williams All-Time: Vassar is 5-19 against the Ephs all-time, as Williams has won the last three meetings including taking last year's meeting in four games in Kenyon Hall.
Up Next: Vassar will open its home schedule this Friday and Saturday, hosting the Vassar Invitational in the Athletics and Fitness Center. VC will battle Purchase College and the University of New England on Friday evening, before taking on Pittsburgh-Bradford and Alfred University Saturday. All matches will have live stats, while all Vassar matches will be live streamed.
