Vassar Women’s Volleyball Match Notes – John Jay, Rutgers-Camden

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 30, 2016) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team will look to continue its strong play as of late, hosting a non-conference tri-match in Kenyon Hall at 11 a.m. with John Jay College and Rutgers-Camden. The Brewers have won five straight matches and 12 of the last 13 as they continue this five-match home stand.

Last Time Out: The Brewers started slow on Thursday evening in a non-conference outing with Hunter College, but responded after losing the first set to knock off the Hawks in four games. Freshman Jane McLeod had a contest-best 18 kills in the match, while sophomore Devan Gallagher chalked up 16 terminations. Sophomore setter Annie MacMillan also finished with 53 assists, tying her career high. Senior Sierra Tobin added 18 digs for the Brewers.

A Look At The Brewers (12-6, 7-1 Liberty)
  • The Brewers are playing some very strong volleyball, hitting .226 on the season as a team. If the trend continues, VC's attacking rate would be the second highest at the College.
  • Vassar has put pressure on opposition a number of ways, including posting 2.3 aces per set while chalking up nearly 13 kills a game. Both are Liberty League highs.
  • The third set has been all Vassar this year, as the Brewers have won 15 of the 18 third sets they have played.
  • McLeod and Gallagher are both averaging an identical 3.59 kills per set this season, which are tied for second-best in the conference.
  • Combined McLeod and Gallagher are averaging 7.18 kills a set together, which is the second-most in the league. Only RIT's Sarah Szybist (5.54) and Sara Taylor (2.07) and their 7.67 is more. 
  • MacMillan leads the conference in assists per set with 10.52, while also posting the fifth-most aces per game with 0.44.
  • Junior Bria Corham was great off the bench Thursday, as she posted seven kills on 11 swings, hitting .636 while adding three aces in just two sets of action.
  • Every player on the team has at least one kill this season, while all but three players have registered one dig.
A Look At The Bloodhounds (6-4, 5-1 CUNYAC)
  • John Jay has only played 10 matches this season, but the Bloodhounds are getting it done in conference play, going 5-1 within the City University of New York Athletic Conference.
  • Rachel Eng is leading the attack for the Bloodhounds, posting 2.74 kills per set while hitting .180.
  • Nyla Lloyd-Clarke is also another option for John Jay, having chalked up 60 kills in 32 sets played. Lloyd-Clarke is the only player on the team to play all 32 sets for JJ this year.
  • Katrina Zapanta has a team-leading 198 assists, averaging 6.39 per game, while also adding 20 kills.
  • Eng sits atop the dig leaders for John Jay with 117, while Jeannette Luna also have 70 while averaging 2.59 digs per game.
  • Head coach Leszek Stankiewicz is the men and women's volleyball coach at John Jay, where he is in his first season.
Against John Jay All-Time: Vassar is 2-0 against John Jay all-time, having earned wins against the Bloodhounds in 2006 and 2008, both in three games. 

A Look At The Scarlet Raptors (10-9, 2-2 NJAC)
  • Rutgers-Camden is playing some strong volleyball, coming into the match with wins in four of its last five matches including a four-set win over Gwynedd-Mercy on Thursday.
  • The Scarlet Raptors have won two New Jersey Athletic Conference contest, knocking off William Paterson in three and New Jersey City University in three.
  • Jordan Erskine leads the team with 2.00 kills per set, though seven players are chalking up at least one kill per set.
  • Jamie Mulligan has registered 1.65 kills a game, while Myiah Gatling also is over 100 kills with 104 on the year. She leads the team in hitting percentage among players with more than 50 kills with a .211 rate.
  • Caitlynn Marcano and Kim Bryfogle are the main setters for the Scarlet Raptors, combining for 438 assists this season. Marcano has started all 19 matches, and leads the team with 266 helpers.
  • Melanie Kaiser holds the team lead for digs this year, averaging 4.53 per set, while Erin Thompson also has posted 137 in 41 sets played.
  • Head coach David Gurst is in his second season with the Scarlet Raptors, taking the team to a 13-14 record last year.
Against Rutgers-Camden All-Time: The Brewers are 1-1 against the Scarlet Raptors all-time, taking a three-set win last year in New Jersey. Saturday's visit will be the first time that the Raptors have come to Poughkeepsie.

Up Next: Vassar will head back on the road next week, taking on the Ducks of Stevens Institute of Technology at 7 p.m. in Hoboken Wednesday before traveling to Wellesley College Saturday, October 8 at 3 p.m. for a match up against one of its Seven Sisters.
