Last Time Out: The Brewers opened their Liberty League schedule with a commanding 7-1 victory over Skidmore College last Saturday. Six Brewers notched goals, as
Rebecca Andrews put up her second and third scores on the young season.
Audrey Pillsbury assisted on one of Andrews' goals and added a goal of her own to open the second half.
A Look At The Brewers (2-5-1):
- Vassar stands tied for second in the Liberty League rankings with three points, along with William Smith and RIT, while Union College is the only team in the conference with more points, having four on the year.
- Last week proved to be big for Vassar freshmen, specifically Gabrielle Deitch, Jordan Moss and Savannah Cutler.
- In her fourth collegiate start, Gabrielle Deitch notched her first career goal, scoring the game-winner in Vassar's 7-1 win over Skidmore on Sept. 24, in addition to her first career assist. The game-winner came in the 21st minute, as Deitch struck into the lower, right corner. She also opened up scoring in the second half, passing through a crowded box to Audrey Pillsbury, who trickled the Brewers' third goal of the game into the bottom, right corner.
- Jordan Moss earned her first start of the season at Montclair State on Sept. 21 and scored her first collegiate goal versus Skidmore on Sept. 24. Against Skidmore, Moss put Vassar ahead 2-0 in the 37th minute. Fellow freshman Savannah Cutler crossed into the box from right to left before Moss gained possession and fired straight back into the net from about six yards out.
- The Brewers have played well in their three home games this year, forcing overtime in the first two before dominating their most recent matchup on Saturday. They are 1-1-1 overall at home this year.
- Vassar has shown an ability to pick up their pace later in the game, outscoring opponents 11-6 in second halves this year.
- Close games have been an Achilles' heel this year for the women in maroon. They have outscored their opponents by an average of 5.5 goals in wins, while opponents have only outscored them by 1.2 goals in losses.
- Vassar has outshot their opponents 125-77 overall and 63-37 in shots-on-goal. Of the Brewers' 14 total goals, 12 have been assisted.
- After their strong showings Saturday, fellow sophomores Audrey Pillsbury and Rebecca Andrews are tied for the team lead in goals scored. Pillsbury has the slight edge in points, with one assist on the year.
- Senior goalie Stephanie Tapolsky has allowed only nine goals in her seven games in net. She has faced 69 shots, 33 of which were on goal.
- Vassar has been proactive about creating opportunities. They are tied for second in the league with 32 corners on the year.
- The Brewers look to build upon last season, in which they finished 9-7-2 overall and 3-3-2 in Liberty League play. Vassar notched a spot in the Liberty League Championship, ultimately falling 5-0 to No. 3 William Smith College in the semifinals.
- Vassar showed incredible endurance last season, playing 10 extra overtime periods in 2015. In four games that went into overtime, the Brewers walked away with either a win or a draw. Already this season, the Brewers have forced an extra period twice (against WCSU on Sept. 7 and Oneonta on Sept. 17).
A Look At the Golden Knights (4-4-0):
- The Golden Knights tallied an 8-1 record in non-conference play last year, yet did not manage to win a game in Liberty League competition.
- Clarkson's 33 goals last season were good for second in club history (35 in 1992). They have already notched 22 this year with more than half the season left to play.
- The Knights have fared much better at home with a 4-1 record. They have yet to win on the road with an 0-3 mark.
- Clarkson has kept their cool so far this year, avoiding cards of any color through eight games.
- Freshman goalkeeper Elyse Green has been lights out this year, posting a 4-2 record with only six goals allowed through 6 games.
- The Golden Knight offense plays a relatively conservative style. They have only been called offside nine times this year as compared to Vassar's 26.
- Senior forward Lauren Flynn has elevated her play so far this year, already matching her season total in goals from last year with seven. She is first in the Liberty League in shots and goals, and second in points with 15. The forward is second in the conference, averagin 1.88 points per game.
- Emily Hallee (three goals), Brianna Weber (two goals, two assists) and Courtney Black (two goals, two assists) have also been productive on offensive, each owning six points on the season.
- Clarkson is second in the conference, averaging 7.25 points per game, only behind William Smith (11.00 ppg) and ahead of St. Lawrence (5.25 ppg).
Against Clarkson All-Time: Vassar is 12-2-2 against Clarkson all-time and they have not lost to the Golden Knights since 2006. Their most recent matchup, however, was a hotly-contested 1-1 tie in double overtime last season. A senior at the time,
Lucy Brainerd evened the score with a dramatic goal in the 80
th minute.
A Look At the Saints (5-1-2):
- St. Lawrence is coming off a 13-5-2 season, earning an at large bid to the NCAA tournament before falling to The College of New Jersey in the first round.
- The Saints return Kaleigh White for her junior campaign. She led the Liberty League in goals a season ago with 15. She has notched three goals and three assists so far this season.
- St. Lawrence has put on the heat in the first half this year, outshooting their opponents 84-33 in that period. While they have rolled it back in second halves (45-49), they have scored 10 of their 15 goals in the second period of games.
- St. Lawrence has the third-best margin in the Liberty League, outscoring opponents by an average of 1.25 goals per game.
- Freshman Emily Wade has made a splash so far in her young career, scoring four goals and adding three assists. She is coming off a monsterperformance two games back, putting in two goals and chipping in an assist against Plattsburgh last week.
- Emily Wade leads the team with 11 points (four goals, three assists), while Kaleigh White has posted nine points on three goals and three assists.
- Goalkeepers Jackie Sovie and Samantha Allen have split time in net. Sovie owns a 3-1-1 record, allowing three goals and making 24 saves, while Allen holds a 2-0-1 mark, allowing two goal and making 10 stops.
- Goalkeepers Jackie Sovie and Samantha Allen have combined to be a wall for the Saints, putting up a stellar save percentage of .872 this season.
Against St. Lawrence All-Time: The Brewers have matched up against St. Lawrence reasonably well, posting a 7-10-1 overall record. However, they have posted a record of 7-3-1 in their last 11 matchups dating back to 2005. Their last matchup with the Saints ended in a 1-0 win last season, with then-senior
Kamaria Coley heading in the loan goal 15 minutes into the match.
Next Up: Following this weekend's action, the Brewers will host the 3-5 Mount Saint Mary College Knights in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, Oct. 5. The game will take place right here on Gordon Field at 4pm.
