CANTON, NY (April 23, 2016) – The Vassar College men's track team saw the 4x100 meter school record fall Saturday, as the squad continued to show improvement within the conference, finishing fourth with 68 points at the Liberty League Championships in action from Merrick-Pinkard Track at St. Lawrence University.
The highlight of the day for the Brewers was the 4x100 meter relay squad setting a new school record, running a 42.92 to just take out the 42.94 set last year. The foursome of
Morrie Lam,
Peter Winkeller,
Kyle Estrada and
Dylan Manning finished third overall to take six points for the Brewers.
Senior
Kyle Dannenberg was one of many senior tracksters who had strong days for Vassar Saturday, as he finished seventh in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a new personal record of 10:33.57, besting his previous personal record of 11:08.77.
Sophomore
Philip Brown debuted in the 10000 meters, and posted a very strong time of 32:13.23, qualifying for the ECAC Championships while finishing third overall to pick up six points. Fellow sophomore
Jesse Schatz was seventh in the 10k as well, earning two points for Vassar after running a 33:13.22.
In the 1500 meter run, sophomore
Jared Freedman ran a team season best and a personal record of 4:02.37 to finish in fourth place for four points, while freshman
Luke Arsenault was eighth in scoring position with a time of 4:09.02.
For the second consecutive season, multi athlete
Taylor Vann won the 100 high hurdles, chalking up 10 points for Vassar with a time of 15.74, just nipping Jordan Sellers of RIT. In the 400 meters, Manning finished in fourth place after running a 50.27, followed very closely by Estrada in fifth place with a time of 50.39.
Junior
Gabe Fishman earned a big time win in the 800 meter run, as he posted a personal record time of 1:55.36 in a line to line victory, never trailing. Fishman also the Brewers complete a legacy event win in the 800, winning by over three seconds. Arsenault and Freedman ran an identical 2:02.30 to finish in ninth and 10
th place, respectively.
Track newcomer and junior
Elijah Winston had a great meet for Vassar, finishing fifth in the 100-meter dash with a 11.54. He later would post a season-best time in the 200 to score for VC with a 22.94 for eighth place finish. He also had the best relay split on the 4x400 meter relay team that qualified for ECAC's with a time of 3:21.74, as Winston teamed with Vann, Estrada and Fishman. The time of 3:21.74 was also under the previous League meet record, as three of the four legs were personal bests.
Sophomore
Michael Scarlett was sixth in the 5000 meter run, as he ran a time of 15:33.49, while freshman
Sam Kobrin ran a personal best time of 16:09.76 for ninth place.
"Everyone who was on the bus had an opportunity to inspire our team with their efforts, and that's what they did," said interim head men's and women's track coach
Justin Harris. "We didn't get all the PR's or points we wanted but they all fought hard and supported each other. Us coaches appreciate everyone who took a chance and put themselves out there to do something for the team."
"I'm proud of the team we brought, so many great performances," said Vassar College interim coordinator of cross country and track
James McCowan. "We saw some amazing step ups from seniors all over the place. The men moved up a place from last year, which is tough with a small team, but really proud of people being games and going out to try hard to do best for the team."
Vassar will now look forward to the very prestigious Penn Relays this weekend, starting Thursday at the University of Pennsylvania.
