Vassar Picks Up Decisive 7-2 Road Win

CANTON, NY (April 23, 2016) — In the penultimate match of the regular season, the Vassar College men's tennis team picked up a commanding win versus St. Lawrence University on the road Saturday, 7-2.

With the win, the Brewers improve to 8-13 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while the Saints fall to 8-8 and 4-2 in the Liberty League. Vassar now sits fourth in the conference standings, while Hobart College is right behind at fifth. St. Lawrence sits at second. Only the top four teams earn a spot in the Liberty League Championships, which begin May 7.

"This was a crucial match for Liberty League standings," coach Alex Wong said. "We want to be in the Liberty League tournament and in the conference championships, and we knew that we needed a win today. The guys were extremely focused."

To begin the day, the Brewers fought for every point to secure the doubles sweep.

"It was key for us to set the tone in doubles," Wong said. "I'm really proud off all three doubles teams for pulling through with three hard-fought wins."

Juan Felipe Laso and Alexander Luckmann picked up the first win for Vassar, winning 8-5 at No. 3 doubles over Dean Sponholz and Paul Barrett. Then Nick Litsky and Evan Udine battled for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles over Rhonny Rosario and Spencer Whitmire. Finally, Daniel Cooper and Gray Thurstone secured the sweep with a hard-fought 9-8(7) victory at No. 1 doubles over Elliot Solandt and Robert Schmitz.

"Coop and Gray played a really tough team," Wong said. "It was back-and-forth, but they pulled out a tough tiebreaker. That was a great way to move into singles."

With the momentum on their side, the Brewers continued to roll through singles. Laso picked up his second win of the day. This time, he took down Barrett, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4 singles.

St. Lawrence earned its first win of the day, as Robert Schmitz beat Udine 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. But Vassar clinched the team victory when Jamie Anderson beat Kevin Frommer 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.

Litsky and Cooper picked up their second wins of the day, defeating Dean Sponholz 6-4, 6-2 at one and Rhonny Rosario 6-2, 6-2 at two.

St. Lawrence put one more win on the board before the day was done, as Marco Amendola took down Nick Lee by a close 6-4, 7-5 decision at six.

Vassar men's tennis plays its final match of the regular season on Josselyn Tennis Courts in Poughkeepsie on Saturday, April 30 at 1 p.m. The Brewers will be hosting the Statesmen of Hobart for Senior Day. Daniel Cooper, Jeffrey Gerwin, Sha Huang and Evan Udine will all be honored, as this marks their last season with the program.
