Last Time OutFor the first leg of spring break, the Brewers traveled to Southern California, where they faced tough competition in five matches. The women took losses against California Lutheran University, Washington College (MD.), Amherst College and Whitman College. The sole win came over Chapman University 6-3 on March 15.
A Look at the ThoroughbredsNo. 17 Skidmore started off the season strong, with four 9-0 Liberty League victories in the fall. The team currently holds a winning record of 6-4 and a perfect 6-0 in conference play. The Thoroughbreds lost their No. 2 player Zoe Valetta, who graduated last year, and their No. 1 player Danielle Giannetti, who left the team during spring break. They added freshmen Zoe Chodak and Laura Swenson. Swenson plays three doubles with Caroline Hobbs. With a victory over St. Lawrence last Saturday, Skidmore earned its 40
th straight Liberty League win.
Previous MeetingThe Brewers battled against the Thoroughbreds twice last year, once in regular season play and later in the Liberty League Finals. In the first meeting, Vassar fell to Skidmore, 6-3, with two of the victories coming from players no longer on the roster. The third win came from No. 1
Kate Christensen over Valella, 7-5, 6-2. The second contest proved more positive for the Brewers as they went ahead 2-1 after doubles with a strong 8-4 win from
Shayna Becker and
Hanna McGuire at three. Despite fighting hard, the women couldn't translate the momentum into singles, as the Thoroughbreds clinched the match 5-3. With very different team make-ups, this year's match will undoubtedly be a showdown.
Common FoesBoth Vassar and Skidmore challenged Saint Lawrence already this season. The Brewers fell 5-4 in a nail-biter match, while the Thoroughbreds won 6-3. Skidmore's No. 2 pair Caroline Finnegan and Brianna Greene defeated St. Lawrence's Alexandra Dadoly and Emily Wyman 8-5, while Vassar's
Kelsey Van Noy and
Lauren Stauffer fell to the same team 9-7. Furthermore, No.1 Thoroughbred Madie Benn barely bested Wyman 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 as Christensen cruised past the Saint 6-1, 6-0. Other than those similarities, the Saint's lineup changed between the two contests so it's difficult to tell how Vassar and Skidmore will stack up.
Two-Handed TerrorSenior captain
Kelsey Van Noy, an ambidextrous, earned an Honor Roll mention after her play over spring break. The Brewer holds a 12-7 singles record and a 9-9 doubles mark with fellow captain Stauffer.
Double TroubleSophomore No. 3 team Christensen and
Morgan Fitzgerald have posted an exceptional record of 10-3 this season. The pair won the sole doubles match in the contest against St. Lawrence. The women also defeated two teams from Cal Lutheran and Chapman while in California.
Up NextThe Vassar women's tennis team will host the annual Seven Sisters Championships April 9-10. Bryn Mawr College, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College and Wellesley College will all travel to Poughkeepsie for the round-robin tournament. The Brewers went undefeated to win the title last year.
