CLAREMONT, CA (March 18, 2016) – It came down to a super tiebreaker in the day's final match, but the Vassar College women's tennis team was edged 5-4 by No. 25 Whitman College in Claremont, CA on Friday.
With the loss, the Brewers fall to 6-6, while the Missionaries improve to 9-6.
Vassar showed fight throughout the day, taking a 2-1 lead in doubles after falling behind early.
Hanna McGuire and
Morgan Fitzgerald lost the first match of the day 8-4 at No. 1 doubles against Mary Hill and Hanna Greenberg. Then,
Kelsey Van Noy and
Lauren Stauffer defeated Cello Lockwood and Jenna Dobrin 8-4 at the two before
Kate Christensen and
Morgane Flournoy took down Allie Wallin and Lindsey Brodeck 8-5 at the three.
With momentum on their side, the Brewers continued to find success in singles.
Connie Yoo picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles over Lindsey Brodeck to put Vassar ahead 3-1.
But Whitman won the next three matches to take 4-3 advantage. Wallin defeated Van Noy 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, Lori Sheng beat Flournoy 6-0, 7-6 (8-6) at the six, and Mary Hill topped
Courtney Geiss in the super tiebreaker 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 at the two.
The Brewers kept chipping away, winning the following match to even it at 4-all. Christensen solidly won her first match 6-3 before coming back from a 5-4 deficit to take her second 7-5.
In the day's deciding match, Fitzgerald was edged in the super tiebreaker 0-6, 6-4, 7-5 against Lockwood.
The Vassar women's tennis team returns home for seven matches, beginning with a meeting with Skidmore College at the Josselyn Tennis Courts on Saturday, April 2 at 1 p.m.
