IRVINE, CA (March 17, 2016) – The Vassar College women's tennis team fell to No. 6 Amherst College 9-0 at University High School in Irvine, CA on Thursday afternoon.
"We played a really great team. They're really talented," coach
Bruce Levine said. "We fought hard, we competed well, and I think it was a really good match to play."
With the loss, the Brewers fall to 6-5, while the Purple & White improve to 2-3.
In doubles,
Kate Christensen and
Morgane Flournoy put up a good fight against Avery Wagman and Rebecca L. Pol, but ultimately lost 8-6 at the third spot. At No. 1 doubles,
Hanna McGuire and
Morgan Fitzgerald fell 8-1 to Sue Ghosh and Sarah Monteagudo, while
Kelsey Van Noy and
Lauren Stauffer were bested by the same score to Vickie Ip and Kelsey Chen at No. 2 doubles.
The Brewers had to play from behind, but that didn't stop them from competing. Four Brewers totaled at least three points against their tough competitors.
"They hung in there and played every point and fought really well," Levine said. "They competed well, and that's what I asked them to do before the match."
Christensen came close to defeating Ghosh, but ultimately fell 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles.
Courtney Geiss lost 6-2, 6-2 to Ip at the two,
Kelsey Van Noy fell 6-2, 6-3 to Monteagudo at the three, Fitzgerald was defeated 6-2, 6-0 by Kelsey Chen at the four,
Dasha Ivenitsky was dropped 6-0, 6-0 by Megan Adamo at the five, and Flournoy was beaten 6-2, 6-1 by Claire Carpenter at the six.
"This is a good match for us to play to learn how to compete," Levine said. "When we get home, our schedule's not always the easiest, so this is one of those matches you learn from."
The Brewers hope to end their spring break trip on a high note when they take on Whitman College at Claremont College in Claremont, CA on Friday at 10 a.m.
