What To Look ForThe Brewers and Montclair State each bring very balanced attacks to the table, as the Red Hawks have seven players on their roster with two of more goals this year. In comparison, Vassar College has six players with two or more scores on the campaign, so both squads will have to contend with a bevy of options on defense. One thing to watch also is how both goalies fare, as Vassar freshman
Paige Amico (Carlsbad, CA/La Costa Canyon) and MSU's Rebecca Brattole have each been guarded well by solid defensive units and well-controlling attacks.
A Look At The No. 11 Red HawksMontclair State is in the midst of a six-game home stand, which has already seen victories over Cortland State (2-0) and No. 5 Skidmore College (3-2). The Red Hawks were 8-1 last season at Sprague Field, with their only loss coming to Rowan University, and MSU is 24-2 over their last 26 games in Montclair. Coming into the week, Montclair State is third in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) in scoring margin, while posting the NJAC's fourth-best attack with 3.14 goals per game. The Red Hawks do well to control the game inside the circle, posting 10.71 penalty corners per contest, second-most in the NJAC.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Struss currently leads the way for the Red Hawks, posting a team-best five goals on the year. Jacinta Santos and Kailey Dalgauer each have seven points as well, while Maura Johnston has helped out with six points on two goals and two assists. Struss is the reigning NJAC Rookie of the Year, and goalkeeper Rebecca Brattole was the Defensive Player of the Year last year in the conference. Megan Roeloffs also earned All-NJAC honors last year, and has started all seven contests this year, making a defensive save to go with one score. Brattole has started each game this season for MSU, making 19 saves en route to two shutouts and a 6-1 record. The Red Hawks have been a national force since the arrival of Beth Gottung, currently in her 14
th season, as she has amassed a 201-62 record. Now though, Gottung has taken an assistant role, and Eileen O'Reilly has taken over as head coach after serving as associate head coach in 2014.
Against MSU All-TimeThe Brewers are one of the few teams in the nation that have a winning record against Montclair State all-time, going 3-2 all-time against the Red Hawks. Wednesday's matchup will be the first between the two teams since the 1998 season, as VC earned a 2-1 win in the Betty Richey Tournament.
Honoree GleeVassar College had a representative on the Liberty League field hockey Team of the Week for the third consecutive week, as freshman
Paige Amico earned Defensive Player of the Week for second time, while fellow newcomer
Megan Caveny (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) took home Rookie of the Week honors for the first time.
Going StreakingWith the win on Saturday, the Brewers chalked up their second three-game win streak of the young season. Since head coach
Michael Warari's arrival in Poughkeepsie, his teams have posted five such streaks of three games or more. VC chalked up just one three-game win streak from 2002-2012.
Moving On UpWith Saturday's win,
Michael Warari moved into No. 2 on the all-time wins list for field hockey at Vassar College with 28. He now sits behind just one person, now women's lacrosse head coach
Judy Finerghty and her 77 wins at VC.
On PaceFreshman
Megan Caveny is currently on pace to break Vassar's record for points per game, as she currently sports a 1.71 PPG mark, which is slightly higher than Tina Caso's mark of 1.56 from 2013.
Helping HandThe Vassar College squad has a whole has been in a giving mood this year, as the squad is on-pace to crush the assists per game record as a team. VC is averaging 2.71 helpers per game, 0.65 assists per game better than the current record from 2013.
Tough TestsThe Liberty League comes into the week with a 30-13 non-conference record, as the 30 non-conference victories are tied for the most in NCAA Division III with the Centennial Conference. The win percentage of .697 for the Liberty League is by far the best in the nation.
Gone GoalThe Brewers come into the week with the conference's best goals against average with a 0.43 GAA, and currently sit eighth out of 164 teams nationally in the category.
Up NextVassar will open its Liberty League schedule on Saturday at Weinberg Field at 2 p.m., entertaining St. Lawrence University.
