What To Look ForThe Brewers have three scheduled trips this season to the Garden State, with Saturday's journey to Jersey slated as the second of the season. In the previous contest in New Jersey, Vassar suffered its only loss of the season, a 1-0 defeat at Kean University. VC's trip this weekend is shorter than that to Kean, so the Brewers will look to jump out early on the host Roadrunners. VC is 1-1 this year on the road and is now 3-7 over the last two seasons, so the Brewers will look to improve on that this weekend.
A Look At The Roadrunners (1-3, 0-0 NJAC)Ramapo College started the season with a 4-0 win over Keuka College, but have gone 0-3 since that win scoring two goals over the stretch. The Roadrunners are 0-3 this season at home, dropping games to Western Connecticut State (3-0), Marywood University (3-1) and St. Thomas Aquinas (2-1), after going 1-7 last season. Ramapo currently has the New Jersey Athletic Conference's sixth-lowest scoring average with 1.50 goals per game, and is posting 15.6 shots per game, fifth in the league. The Roadrunners have the conference's most saves this season with 39.
The Roadrunners are led offensively by Nicole Healy, who has scored two goals on the season. Gianna Mouskourie, Stephanie Gallo, Melissa Choka and Christina Bacino have each tallied as well for RC, while Lauren Grosso has assisted on three of the team's four goals. Defender Kelsey Lawrence has the team's lone defensive save, and Emily Wisneski and Emily Kramer have combined to play 270 minutes in the cage, making 37 saves. The Roadrunners have started well this season, outscoring teams 6-3 in the opening period, but have not scored in the second half thus far in 2015.
Against Ramapo All-TimeThe Brewers are 3-1 against Ramapo College all-time, having earned wins in each of the last two contests with scores of 3-0 in 2013 and 2-0 a season ago. Last season,
Hayley Beach (Latham, NY/Shaker) and
Bianca Zarrella (Leominster, MA/Leominster) each netted goals as VC outshot the Roadrunners 27-3 in that contest.
Helping HandThe Brewers have been solid on offense, scoring 3.33 goals per game this year thus far. Vassar has assisted on 17 of their 20 goals this year. The Brewers also lead the Liberty League in total assists.
Fresh FacesVassar College has benefitted from a solid young newcomer group, as the Brewers have seen five freshmen net goals this season thus far.
Not In The CornerThe Brewers so far this season have been offensively sound without the help of penalty corners, as VC is averaging just six corners per game, which is the fewest per game in the Liberty League.
Goal OutputVassar has scored four of more goals in each of its last two games, which marks the first time since the 2012 season that has happened, as VC knocked off Morrisville State 9-0 and Elms College 6-0.
Tough Road AheadAfter Saturday's game at Ramapo, the Brewers will play four of their next six games against teams ranked in the top 16 in the FieldHockeyCorner.com RPI rankings. VC will take on Montclair State (No. 16), William Smith (No. 3), Rochester (No. 14) and Skidmore (No. 1).
5-1 AgainThe Brewers have started out 5-1 for the second straight season, a feat that had not been accomplished at Vassar until last season.
Stop Right ThereJunior
Sophie Arnold (Merion, PA/Lower Merion) has been great on the back line for VC, making three defensive saves so far this season, which leads the Liberty League as well.
Up NextThe Brewers will turn around and head right back to New Jersey on Wednesday, taking on No. 11 Montclair State University at 7 p.m. in Montclair, NJ in a big non-conference clash.
