What To Look ForThe Brewers and Colonials have played some exciting games over the last few seasons, and don't expect that to change Wednesday evening when WCSU comes to town. The two teams are very similar based on statistics, as both have scored over three goals a game while allowing less than 0.40 per contest. Both teams have lost just once, both on 1-0 defeats, while each team has cruised to shutout wins in three of their victories. In last year's contest, an overtime win for VC, there were a total of seven goals so it'll be interesting to see what kind of game materializes on Wednesday.
A Look At The Colonials (3-1, 1-0 Little East)Western Connecticut State dropped its first game of the season, a 1-0 loss at New Paltz, but has stormed back with three straight wins. Over those victories, the Colonials have averaged over six goals per game over that stretch. The Colonials have a veteran team this year, as zero freshman have played in a game so far this season, while the three top scorers thus far are seniors. The Colonials have the Little East's second-best scoring offense with 4.5 tallies per contest, while the 17 assist for WestConn is nearly double of the nine from Westfield State. Making things even increasingly difficult for Colonial opposition is the fact that WCSU is allowing just 0.25 goals per game on the year, best in the Little East and among the national leaders.
On the offensive side of the ball, Western has been paced by the nine points from Heidi Odenwaelder, as she has posted two goals and a LEC-leading five assists. Jenny Cappello leads the team with four goals, while six other players have posted two scores on the season. Kristy Matasavage has two of the three game-winning goals as well as four assists, and defenders Bryanna Millaby and Brianna Reda have anchored the backline while starting all four games. Head coach Danielle McDonnell, in her 10
th season at WCSU, has entrusted junior Kristy Trotta in cage for the majority of the minutes this season, as she has allowed just one goal in 252 minutes of playing time.
Against Western Connecticut All-TimeThe Brewers will take on the Colonials for the 12
th time Wednesday evening, as Vassar holds an 8-3 record all-time with Western. VC won the first six meetings between these two teams, starting back in 1988, followed by three straight victories by WCSU from 2009-11. The Brewers have earned the last two matchups though, and come into Wednesday's affair with a 3-2 record at home versus the West Conn.
Climbing The LadderSenior
Lauren Wiebe moved into fourth all-time at Vassar College in points Saturday with her two goals against Brockport, as she currently has 53 points for her career, seven shy of the 60 from Chapel Love '98 for third.
First-Year PhenomFreshman
Megan Caveny (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) comes into the week with a team-leading three goals and nine points. Caveny would be the first freshman to lead the Brewer field hockey team in goals since Lindsay Guest in 2004.
One For YouThe Brewers have allowed just one goal over the first five games this season, which marks the second straight season that VC has allowed one goal over the span of the first five contests.
Flora ArrangementJunior
Flora Crichton-Stuart (New York, NY/St. Mary's) scored her second career goal on Saturday, as she knocked in a tally against Brockport on a loose ball in front. Crichton-Stuart's only other goal came last year against this Wednesday's opponent, Western Connecticut.
Ranked RightVassar College comes into the week ranked No. 24 according to the computer rating on FieldHockeyCorner.com, slotting between Montclair State and Dickinson. Three Liberty League teams are currently in the top 10 (Skidmore No. 3, William Smith No. 5, Rochester No. 10).
Large In The MarginVC comes into the weekend with conference's second-largest margin of defeat this season, winning games on average by 2.80 goals per game.
Feeley GoodFreshman
Monica Feeley (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township) has been very solid for VC, as her and teammate
Megan Caveny have tied for third in the Liberty League assist category with three thus far. Feeley netted her first career goal Saturday as well.
Clean SheetFreshman
Paige Amico (Carlsbad, CA/La Costa Canyon) comes into the week tied for the conference lead for shutouts with three.
Up NextThe Brewers will head to the Garden State for the second time this season, heading to Mahwah, NJ for a 1:00 p.m. contest with Ramapo College Saturday afternoon.
