What to Look ForWith the postponing of the doubleheader against Skidmore, Vassar has now had nine games postponed or cancelled this season. With 14 games left in conference play, each game is becoming more and more important for the Brewers' playoff hopes. While Vassar has picked up just one league win, they did split with RPI this past Sunday, so the team will look to carry that play into this weekend.
A Look at the Tigers (9-3, 3-0 Liberty League)Despite having a very successful season thus far, RIT has been in a similar situation to Vassar, with the Tigers last six games being postponed, including a four-game conference set against Clarkson. When they have played, RIT has been dominant, only losing to Colby, St. Olaf, and Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Tigers have won all seven of their games in the state of New York, including all three in a three-game set over St. Lawrence.
At the plate, sophomore outfielder Will Gorman leads the team with 21 hits with a .488 batting average. Gorman is also first on the team with 18 RBIs and a .814 slugging percentage. Behind Gorman, junior shortstop Taylor Hogan has 15 hits, followed by three players with 14 hits, including senior first baseman Skip Flanagan, who also has a team-high 20 runs. On the mound, junior pitcher Rory Little leads the way with 2-0 record and 17 innings pitched with a 2.65 ERA. Fellow junior Brandon Cohall has a team-low 2.25 ERA of the pitchers with more than 10 innings pitched.
Against RIT All-TimeRIT currently leads the series 8-6 over the Brewers, dating back to 2001. From 2001 to 2004, the teams played six times, with the Tigers winning all six matchups. However, after an eight-year hiatus, the Brewers have won six of the last eight, including three of four in a four-game series on Apr. 27-28, 2013.
Jon JonJunior pitcher
Jonathan Hong (Orinda, CA/Miramonte) came up huge for the Brewers against RPI this past Sunday, holding the Engineers to just five hits and two earned runs in seven innings for an eventual 4-3 Vassar victory. For his efforts, Hong was named Vassar Featured Athlete of the week.
Fresh FaceFreshman infielder
Bobby Kinne (Great Barrington, MA/Monument Mountain Regional) has had a great start to his Vassar career, leading the Brewers with 13 total hits on a .384 batting average.
On The DefenseJunior infielder
Brooks English (Milton, MA/Milton) has been a stalwart on defense for Vassar, leading the team with 64 putouts and three assists on 67 chances for a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
Twice As NiceJunior pitcher
Connor Cucalon (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius), despite only pitching 4.1 innings, has recorded both wins for the Brewers this season. After allowing two runs in his first game against Southern Vermont, Cucalon has not allowed a run since in three innings, dropping his ERA to 2.08 on the year.
Two BagsJunior outfielder
Nick Johnson (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius) leads the team with five doubles on the season. Johnson has been solid all-around at the plate this season, hitting .333, and is second on the team with 12 hits and a .472 slugging percentage.
Up NextAfter RIT, Vassar will take on Skidmore College for a Liberty League twinbill on Wednesday, Apr. 15 at 4 p.m., before returning home to host the University of Rochester in a huge four-game conference series on Apr. 18-19 on Prentiss Field.
