Goldstein Powers Vassar to 12-8 Win Over New Paltz

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, NY (April 14, 2015) - Junior Isabelle Goldstein (Belmont, MA/Belmont) finished with four goals and four assists, while Vassar scored four unanswered goals to end the game and seal a 12-8 victory over SUNY-New Paltz Tuesday afternoon. The eight points tied Goldstein's single game career-high, while five other Brewers notched goals to bring VC to 11-0 all-time against the Hawks. Vassar improves to 6-5 on the season with the win, while New Paltz drops to 2-8.

Junior Kim Mulvehill (Sunbury, MA/Chapel Hill - Chauncey Hill) tallied three goals in the first half to post her fourth hat trick of the season, while senior goalkeeper Kate Pula (Washington Township, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) made eight saves to earn the victory.

Senior Evie Toland (Nyack, NY/Nyack) got Vassar on the board first with a goal at the 28:04 mark, scoring her second of the season off a dish from Goldstein. Mulvehill added to the tally a few minutes later, scoring on another assist from Goldstein to put the Brewers up 2-0.

The Mulvehill/Goldstein connection was renewed just a minute later, as the junior attacker scored her second of the game at the 24:58 mark. Sophomore Sydney Spadinger (Shelton, CT/Shelton) pushed the lead to 4-0 with 19:48 to play, scoring an unassisted goal for her fourth strike of the season.

The Hawks answered back in the final 15 minuets of the first half, going on a 4-0 surge of their own to pull the game even. New Paltz finally halted the early Vassar run at the 15:15 mark, as Melissa Wagner broke into the scoring column off a feed from Carissa Citro. The Hawks cut the lead in half less than a minute later, as Alexa Vitale converted a free position attempt to make it 4-2.

Kelsey Healy extended New Paltz's run to three scoring with 8:24 left, as the hosts came within one down the stretch of the half. A goal from Lianne Valdivia tied the game at four with 7:18 to play, as Vassar's early lead was quickly erased.

Neither side could hit shots down to the final minutes of the half, before Mulvehill broke the deadlock with her third goal of the game off an assist from senior Leigh Anne Baldwin (Simsbury, CT/Westminster School). The Brewers carried their 5-4 lead into the break, outshooting the Hawks 15-8 in the opening frame with a 7-3 edge in draw controls.

Goldstein wasted no time getting the Brewers up by two at the start of the second half, scoring just 45 seconds in to extend VC's lead to 6-4. New Paltz answered back at the 22:10 mark, as Wagner notched her second of the game on an assist by Vitale to cut the VC advantage to one.

The teams traded goals again over the next several minutes, as a goal from Toland was quickly answered by the Hawks to come within one at the 19:24 mark. New Paltz was once again able to pull even less than a minute later, as a free position goal from Julia Johnson tied the game at seven.

Vassar again refused to yield the lead, as Goldstein came through with her second goal of the game to put the visitors back ahead 8-7. Like clockwork, the Hawks again evened the score, as Johnson scored less than 30 seconds later to put the pressure back on the Brewers.

Vassar was able to go back up by two, after a pair of goals from sophomore Brittany Botticelli (Commack, NY/Commack) and Goldstein gave VC a 10-8 lead with 11 minutes remaining. Freshman Storm Sideleau (Hopkinton, NH/Kimball Union Academy) scored her first of the game with 7:52 on the clock, forcing a New Paltz timeout and giving Vassar its largest lead since the 14:25 mark in the first half.

Goldstein extended the lead to four with 6:43 left to play, scoring her fourth goal of the game to put VC up 12-8. The Brewers locked down on defense from then on, allowing the Hawks just three shots and forcing four turnovers to secure the four-goal victory.

Vassar was highly disruptive on opposing clears, as the Hawks finished just 12-23 compared to VC's 12-15 conversion rate. VC outshot the Hawks 30-21 while causing six turnovers.

The Brewers will be back in action at home this Saturday, April 18 to host Bard College in a Liberty League matchup at 4:00 pm.

Notes:

Isabelle Goldstein's four assists against New Paltz push her to 22 on the season, which ranks sixth on the all-time season list in Vassar history. Goldstein is now six away from her season-best 28 assists set last season, and is seven away from the school record for assists in a season (29) set by Ali Fantl ('07) back in 2007.
