Balance Pushes Men’s Volleyball Past Brooklyn College Thursday

Box Score

BROOKLYN, NY (March 26, 2015) – The Vassar College men's volleyball team had no troubles upending host Brooklyn College Thursday, breezing past the Bulldogs in straight sets in action from the West Quad Center. Vassar College earned the win with scores of 25-7, 25-18 and 25-13.

Vassar (14-11) used a strong service game to get past the Bulldogs (0-26), accumulating 17 service aces, while siding out at a 77 percent clip for the match. The Brewers also hit a solid .329 for the contest, marking the fourth consecutive match VC has attacked over .200. Vassar also saw a very balanced offense, as Vassar had 12 players with a kill, including five with four or more terminations.

The day did come with a little bit of history as well, as freshman setter Zechariah Lee (Santa Clarita, CA/Saugus) set the single season record for aces in a season, as he broke the previous record of 54 set by Jeff Barr back in 2003 with a pair Thursday.

Junior middle hitter Erik Halberg (Newark, DE/Salesianum School) got his offense going against Brooklyn, as he posted his second most kills for a match this year with a game-best seven finishes.  Freshman Brian Manley (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) chalked up six kills as well for the Brewers.

Sophomore outside Christian Lizana (Dublin, PA/Pennridge) chalked up five kills and three aces, while freshman pin hitter Jorge Rivera (San Juan, PR/Cupeyville) added five terminations on nine swings. Sophomore libero Nick Zarchen (Santa Monica, CA/Santa Monica) had a match-best 11 digs, and Lee and senior setter Colin White-Dzuro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Royal St. George) combined on 30 assists.

Junior Reno Kriz (Breinigsville, PA/Parkland) finished with a team-high four service aces, while White-Dzuro complimented the efforts with three more aces and five digs. VC held Brooklyn College to just .039 hitting on the day, while leading for all but one point all match. Shawn Varghese had a team-high four kills and seven digs for the Bulldogs in the loss.

Vassar will jump back into United Volleyball Conference (UVC) action Saturday, March 28 at 2 p.m., taking on conference rivals Penn State-Behrend and No. 1 Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ for a pair of huge league matches.
