A Look at the Red Hawks (2-0, 0-0 Skyline)Montclair State enters Wednesday's tilt as the No. 14 team in the nation according to the latest USILA Poll, picking up a pair of 9-8 wins over RPI (2/22) and Dickinson College (2/28) to open the 2015 season. The Red Hawks are coming off a 16-2 campaign in 2014, where the squad won the Skyline conference and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament. First-year head coach Mike Schambach now leads Montclair State, taking the reigns of an experienced roster led by senior captains Kiel Deitrich, Michael Schreck and Robert Snow.
The Red Hawks played two close games in the month of February, starting with a narrow 9-8 win over RPI on February 22. The Engineers led by as many as three in the second quarter, before a five-goal scoring streak put Montclair ahead 7-5. Junior Brett Mangan came up clutch for MSU, scoring with seven seconds left in the game on a dish from Schreck to clinch the win. Montclair again played from behind against Dickinson, and trailed for a majority of regulation before a goal from junior Connor Cunningham sent the game into overtime with 43 seconds left. Schreck came up clutch for MSU in the second OT period, scoring an unassisted goal to power his side to its second one-goal victory of the season.
Sophomore Lucas Jones has earned the starting gig in goal for the Red Hawks in the team's first two games, allowing 16 goals while making 26 stops for a .619 save percentage. He appeared in seven games during his freshman season, making seven saves while allowing 11 goals in 61:17 minutes of action. Sophomore Blase Mantineo has been the team's top option on the faceoff, winning 18 of 38 for a .474 faceoff percentage this season. As a freshman, Mantineo led the Red Hawks in faceoff percentage with a .566 percentage in restarts.
Against Montclair State All-TimeVassar and Montclair have met just twice in the all-time series between the schools, with the Red Hawks picking up wins over the Brewers in both games during the 2013 and 2014 season. Montclair earned a 14-7 win over VC when the teams met on March 5 last season, led by four goals from then-sophomore Don Finn.
Opening With a BangVC's 18 goals against Manhattanville marks the most ever scored in school history to open a season for the Brewers. The 16-point margin of victory is also a school record in season debuts for Vassar, and ties the team's largest margin of victory from last season when the Brewers bested SUNY-Cobleskill 21-5.
Killer Combination Seniors
Scott Brekne and
Sean Brazier have been a dangerous duo for the Brewers during their careers in the burgundy and gray, combining for 70 goals and 51 assists coming into 2015. The former high school teammates at Ward Melville picked up right where they left off fro last season, as Brazier led the Brewers in goals (4) on six shots, while Brekne tallied a team-high five points on two goals and three assists.
Climbing Up the Record Books Junior
Noah Parson and Brekne came into the 2015 season ranked ninth and tied for 10
th (respectively) on the all-time points list in school history. After scoring a hat trick against Manhattanville, Parson now has 78 points all-time, two short of Ben Kelly's ('00) career mark of 80 points scored. Brekne now sits one spot behind Kelly at No. 10 in the all-time assists list with 32 career feeds, while Parson's 53 career goals puts him three away from passing Nick Cardillo ('10) on the all-time list.

Erik Mikelinich (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills HS East) had a successful collegiate debut against Manhattanville, making five saves while allowing no goals in two halves of play.
March on MarchThe Brewers have eight games slated in March this season; the busiest month of the year for the team. Vassar went 3-4 over the course of March last season, and is 8-24 during the month in the past five seasons.
