Colorado College Slides Past Vassar, 15-9

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – Three different Tiger players finished the game with a hat trick, as Colorado College held off Vassar 15-9 Sunday afternoon at Washburn Field. The Tigers never trailed in the game, answering any short runs from the Brewers to seal the victory. Sophomore Liam Moriarty (New Fairfield, Ct/New Fairfield) led the way for VC, finishing with four points on three goals and an assist. Vassar moves to 2-2 on the season while Colorado College jumps to 6-1 on the year with the victory.

Colorado College was dominant on the faceoff, winning 19 restarts to VC's nine while committing two less turnovers than their counterparts. The Brewers scored the only man up goal in the game, but converted just one of seven extra man opportunities.

The Tigers went up early in the first quarter, outscoring VC 4-1 to get ahead early. Austin Davie and Taylor Paul both notched goals for the hosts to go up 2-0 in the first seven minutes. Junior Noah Parson (Cary, NC/Panther Creek) got one back for the Brewers at the 8:20 mark on a dish from senior Sean Brazier (Stony Brook ,NY/Ward Melville), bringing the Brewers within one. Colorado College was able to put two more away in the final four minutes, as Jack McCormick and Eric Neumeyer both notched goals to give CC a 4-1 lead at the quarter break.

VC struck first in the second quarter, as Moriarty senior Scott Brekne (Stony Brook ,NY/Ward Melville) scored a pair of goals to again bring the Brewers within one. The Tigers went on a four-goal tear over the next ten minutes, jumping back ahead of Vassar 8-3. Brekne was able to get one back at the 2:20 mark, while Parson took advantage of a man up opportunity with 1:53 left in the half scoring off a feed from Moriarty. CC held a 34-13 advantage in shots in the first half, as VC went into the break behind 8-5.

Vassar again got off to a hot start in the third quarter, as Moriarty scored his second of the game to pull Vassar within two at the 12:51 mark. Colorado College tacked two more on over the next 10 minutes to push the lead to 10-6, before Moriarty scored another unassisted goal at the 1:22 mark to make it 10-7. Henri Halle was able to put away a shot with just five seconds left in the quarter, as VC trailed 11-7 heading into the final 15 minutes.

The Tigers added insurance in the fourth quarter, outscoring Vassar 4-2 to earn the six-goal victory. Junior Colin Cederna (Milan, MI/Saline) and sophomore Matthew Altman (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) were able to notch their first of the game in the closing minutes, but it was not enough as the Tigers earned their sixth straight win.

Freshman goalie Erik Mikelinich (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hallow Hills HS West) made 13 saves in 60 minutes of play, while Colorado College goalie Chase Murphy had a game-high 17 saves to earn his third win of the season.

VC will be back in action on Tuesday, March 17 to face Adams State University at 1:00 pm (ET) at Washburn Field.
