Box Score 2 POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 7, 2015) – The Vassar College men's volleyball team hosted a non-conference tri-match Saturday afternoon, defeating New Jersey City University 3-1 before ending the afternoon with a four-set loss to Wentworth Institute of Technology. In the middle match of the day, WIT knocked off New Jersey City University in straight sets.
Vassar 3, New Jersey City 1The Vassar College men's team moved their win streak to three games with the four-set win over the Gothic Knights, winning with scores of 25-6, 25-20, 22-25 and 25-19. In the opening game, the Brewers attacked at a .571 rate and held NJCU (3-3) to just three kills on 23 swings to take an early 1-0 lead.
In the second set, freshman
Matthew Knigge (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) posted six of his 14 kills in the period to push VC to a two-set advantage. The Gothic Knights showed some fight in the third set, trimming the Vassar lead to just a game, using a late 4-0 run to pull away for the 25-22 win. In the fourth set though, Vassar posted a match-high 15 kills to earn the win.
Knigge swung at a .545 percentage against New Jersey City, earning 14 kills on 22 attempts, while junior
Reno Kriz (Breinigsville, PA/Parkland) was also efficient with 14 kills on 24 attacks. Freshman
Zechariah Lee (Santa Clarita, CA/Saugus) posted 33 assists, four assisted blocks and three aces, while fellow newcomer
Jorge Rivera (San Juan, PR/Cupeyville) tallied 10 kills and four digs.
Sophomore
Trey Cimorelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) had a game-best 15 digs, the most in a single match for the libero this season. Senior
Colin White-Dzuro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Royal St. George) dished out 13 assists and had four digs as well for VC, which finished the match with a .312 hitting percentage and 52 total kills.
Wentworth 3, Vassar 1In a rematch of an earlier contest this season, the Brewers tried to rally late but were knocked off by WIT with scores of 25-23, 25-16, 26-28 and 25-19. The story of the match was the net presence from the Leopards (10-2), who finished with 16 total blocks while holding Vassar to a .036 attack percentage.
In the first set and tied at 10, WIT (10-2) chalked up a 5-1 run, holding the four-point lead through the score of 20-16. VC battled back, eventually tying the set at 22 on a block by Kriz and
Christian Lizana (Dublin, PA/Pennridge). Vassar took the lead a point later on an ace by Rivera, but WIT scored the final three points of the set to earn the 1-0 advantage.
WIT was never threatened in the second set, taking an 8-2 lead and cruising to a 2-0 match advantage. In the third game, Wentworth again stormed out to a quick advantage but Vassar didn't go away. The Brewers rallied to tie the game at 10, and later in the set held a 24-21 lead for game point. WIT posted the next four points, but a Kriz termination thwarted a match point for the Leopards.
Vassar had two set points before finally earning the win at 28-26 on an attacking error by WIT's Collin Ritter, which touched the antennae off a overpass. In the end though, WIT was too strong, posted 13 kills on 25 attempts in the fourth set to pull away for the win.
Kriz had a match-best 15 kills, adding six digs and five total blocks for the Brewers versus Wentworth, while Lizana totaled a double-double of 10 kills, 10 digs and five rejections. Rivera finished with seven kills, two aces, four digs and two assisted blocks, and Knigge added seven kills and three blocks. Cimorelli had another match-best 13 digs for Vassar, which tied a season-high with 11 team rejections against WIT.

The Brewers will be back in Kenyon Hall Thursday evening at 7 p.m. for a non-conference match, taking on Medgar Evers College.
