Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 20, 2015) – The Vassar College women's basketball finished the season Friday night in fine fashion, knocking off Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 69-51 in the final contest of the 2014-15 campaign for the Brewers.
The contest helped Vassar College finish the season on a four-game winning streak, which matched the Brewer's longest win streak of the year. VC ended the season 12-13, posting a 7-9 record within the Liberty League. Vassar led for nearly 34 minutes of the contest Friday night, taking a lead at 18-17 and never looking back.
In the first stanza, the Engineers (13-11, 9-6 Liberty League) led in the early going by as much as six points at 17-11 after a pair of freebies by Bailei Tetrault. Vassar responded with a 12-0 run over the next 2:45, fueled by a pair of triples from freshman guard
Samarah Cook (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) to pull ahead by six.
Vassar would take a two-point lead into the break at 29-27 though, as Cook and fellow freshman
Ariella Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA/Redwood) each paced the Brewers with eight points in the first half. After the break, Vassar slowly grew its lead up to as much as 18 late in the contest, running away with the season-ending victory. The Brewers got at least six points for everyone that played, and shot 56.0 percent in the second half (14-25).
Rosenthal finished with a game-best 19 points, grabbing seven rebounds as well to go with two assists. The freshman ended her first campaign with the Brewers with 258 points, the most for a newcomer since
Cydni Matsuoka scored 458 back in 2010-11. The double-digit contest was also her 13
th of the season.
Junior
Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) scored 11 points for the Brewers, mired in foul trouble for much of the game, but hit 5-of-6 from the floor and pulled down five rebounds as well. Drakeley moved into No. 10 all-time in scoring, passing Jamie Pearson '91 and her 1,005 points, as she now sits with 1,012 points in her career at Vassar.
Fellow junior
Rose Serafini (Milton, Ontario, Canada/Milton Area) had another banner game for Vassar, as her coming out party over the last five games ended with her first career double-double, pulling down a game-best 14 rebounds to go with 10 points and a game-best six blocks. Over the final five contests, Serafini averaged 8.8 points, 9.8 rebounds and nearly five rejections per night for the Brewers.
Senior
Allyson Pemberton (Weston, MA/Weston) concluded her career with the Brewers with eight points on 4-of-6 shooting, as the guard ends her career with 503 total points and fifth all-time in field goal percentage at .448. Pemberton also ranks sixth-ever at Vassar College in free throw percentage with a .746 clip.
Junior
Alex Moon (Mission Hills, CA/Bishop Alemany) posted seven points and seven rebounds for the Brewers Friday night, while
Kim Romanoff (Durham, CT/Coginchaug Regional) tallied six points, five assists and three steals. The Brewers shot 44.1 percent (26-59) on the night, which was the fourth-highest mark of the season. Vassar also made 13-of-15 from the line, and set the school record for team free throw percentage in a season with a .790 rate this year.
Vassar College won the rebounding battle 44-29 Friday night, while holding one of the top scoring tandems in the conference in Amanda Lynch and Ashley Clough to just 18 total points on the night. RPI got a team-high 13 from Lynch, while Shaina Iton posted 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks for RPI.
The Brewers are set to return eight letter winners in 2014-15, with the future looking bright for the Vassar College women's basketball team.
