Last Time Out: Vassar dropped its final away game of the season 88-60 on Wednesday night against Bard. Vassar led 42-41 at halftime, but the Raptors put together an 18-2 run to pull away early in the second half. Freshman
Spencer Einhorn (Birmingham, AL/Mountain Brook) scored a career-high 17 points, 15 of them in the first half. Senior
Curtis Smith (Mastic, NY/Eastport South Manor) added 15 points, while fellow senior
Jonathan Safir (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville North) tied a career high with two steals.
A Look at the Engineers(6-17, 3-11 Liberty)The Engineers defeated the Brewers 78-50 on February 3
rd, but have not won a game since then. In that game, RPI held Vassar to 36.7% shooting from the field and 5-24 (20.8%) shooting from three-point range. RPI had four players score in double figures and junior forward Chase Almond led all players with 20 points. Almond leads the Engineers in scoring this season, averaging 13.0 points-per-game. He also leads the team in rebounds with an average of 8.1 RPG.
Against RPI All-Time:Vassar has a record of 8-24 all-time against RPI, but won both of its games against the Engineers last year. The Brewers cracked the 100-point mark in both of those contests. Matchups between the two schools have often been high-scoring affairs, with the winning team scoring 100 or more points on six different occasions.
Turning the Page:The Brewers have struggled this season, posting a 7-17 overall record and a 3-12 record in the Liberty League. However, the 2012-13 season saw Vassar finish 7-18 overall and 3-13 in the league, only to enjoy the best season in school history the following year. In 2013-14, the Brewers went 19-8, made it to the finals of the Liberty League playoffs, and ranked among the top teams in the nation in five statistical categories: field goal percentage for and against, three-point field goal percentage for and against, and defensive rebounds. With a talented group of young players returning next year, including six freshmen and three sophomores, the Brewers will be gunning for a similar turnaround.
Fab Five:This will be the final game in a Brewers uniform for five players, marking the largest group of seniors since the 2007-08 season, when six players graduated.
Freshman PhenomFreshman
Jesse Browne (Barrington, RI/Deerfield Academy) is averaging 8.9 points per game this season, which is highest scoring average by a freshman since
Johnny Mrlik averaged 13.4 points per game in 2011-12.
