Last Time Out: The Brewers had one of their best games of the season their last time out, as they were able to take down Hobart by a score of 65-63. Vassar came into the game last in the Liberty League while Hobart was first in the standings, but the huge Vassar upset knocked Hobart down to third place. The Vassar victory came on senior night, and rightfully so, as Vassar seniors
Alex Snyder (Rutland, VT/Rutland) and
Curtis Smith (Mastic, NY/Eastport South Manor) led the charge. Snyder scored 13 points and reached the milestone of 1000 career points while Smith added 18 points of his own.
A Look at the Raptors (10-13, 5-9 Liberty)Bard comes into this game after a sizeable victory against RIT last Saturday by a score of 73-58. This win serves as Bard's first ever topping of RIT in eight games between the two schools. Bard has never won more than 11 games in one season, so with 10 current wins and two games left for the Raptors this could prove to be a historic year for the Raptors.
Bard has had a season of relatively even games, as they are averaging 62.1 points per game vs. their opponents' average of 64.3. Their offense is one where multiple players share the burden of scoring, with DeVahnte Mosley averaging 11.8 PPG, Siondueh Burnette averaging 9.5, and Alex Fabean-Scotch averaging 9.4. Any of these players could go off at any time, which was showcased perfectly in their last game when Burnette had 19, Fabean-Scotch finished with 14, and Mosley racked up 13.
Bard had dropped four games in a row prior to their trumping of RIT including a 25 point loss to Hobart. It will be interesting to see how a Vassar team who has just defeated Liberty League giant Hobart transitions to playing middle-of-the-conference Bard. Vassar had also lost four prior to its win over the Statesmen, so this will be a test of which side can turn its current momentum into a flurry of wins at the end of this season.
Against Bard All-Time:Vassar has dominated Bard historically; winning 27 games to Bard's five. Vassar had won three contests in a row against Bard coming into this season, however they were knocked off on January 6th when Bard defeated VC at the AFC 61-54. This loss came in a game where Vassar was outshot 40.8% to 32.0% from the floor while a 16 point game by Fabean-Scotch contributed to the Bard win.
Freshmen Force: In what could be referred to as a transition season for the Brewers, one bright spot which has been shining rather bright as of late has been the play of the freshmen, specifically that of
Jesse Browne (Barrington, RI/Deerfield Academy),
Tony Caletti, (Mill Valley, CA/Branson) and
Spencer Einhorn (Birmingham, AL/Mountain Brook).
All three of these freshmen showed their talent against Hobart, where Einhorn scored 11 and both Caletti and Browne dropped in nine. With increasing minutes has come increased performance for the rookie class, so the group will definitely be players to watch against Bard.
Moving Up the Record Books:After eclipsing points against Hobart on February 14,
Alex Snyder now claims the No. 12 spot all-time in the Vassar history books in points scored. With two games left, Snyder will have the opportunity to pass Brian Butterworth ('09) who finished his career at VC with 1,017. Snyder is currently fifth in all-time assists (250) and third in all-time rebounds (823). At his current pace, he will be projected to pass Tirek Gayle ('01) who finished with 835 career-boards.
Up Next: Vassar's final home game will take place this Friday the 20th when they face off with RPI in the Athletics and Fitness Center.
