Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 12, 2015) – The Vassar College men's volleyball team broke multiple school records Thursday evening, as the Brewers raced by Medgar Evers College 3-0 in non-conference action from Kenyon Hall.
The Brewers (7-4) knocked off the Cougars 25-8, 25-5 and 25-5, as the service game for Vassar was the story. Vassar opened the evening by chalking up seven in the first set, with all seven coming from freshman setter
Zechariah Lee (Santa Clarita, CA/Saugus). In the opening set, VC scored the first eight points and hit a season-best .737 in the game to earn the early lead.
The second set saw much of the same, as Vassar got nine service aces in the middle stanza, with six coming from senior
Luke Sobieraj (Chicago, IL/Northside College Prep.). The senior right side was stellar in the second game, as he chalked up six kills as well.
In the final period, Vassar tallied another seven aces, breaking the school record for service winners with its 23 on the night. The service ace record had stood since March 24, 2010, when VC connected for 21 against Yeshiva University. The Brewers also got three kills each in the third set by
Erik Halberg (Newark, DE/Salesianum School) and
Brian Manley (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park), rolling to the win.
VC finished the night with a hitting percentage of .688, which also set a school record, eclipsing the .562 set back on January 19, 2008 against Fontbonne University. On the evening, the Brewers posted 34 kills on just 48 swings, chalking up just one error.
The Brewers got great performances out of many players, including Halberg, who posted eight kills on eight attacks. Lee broke the school mark for aces in a three-set match with his seven in the opening set, dishing out 12 assists as well. Sobieraj tallied eight kills on 10 attempts, and
Quinn Rutledge (Chesterfield, VA/Cosby) had 16 assists and two kills.
Manley ended the night with eight terminations on 10 attacks, and freshman
Jorge Rivera (San Juan, PR/Cupeyville) added three aces and three digs. Jamal Chance had four kills to lead the way for Medgar Evers (0-7).
Vassar College will return to the floor Sunday, taking on No. 10 New York University at 2 p.m. and host No. 14 Elmira College at 5 p.m. in the opening action of the United Volleyball Conference in Elmira, NY.
