What To Look ForThis season, the Brewers have been great at bouncing back after a loss, posting three-game winning streaks twice after their previous two defeats. In each of the first two losses for Vassar, the Brewers were shutout and followed that up by netting five goals against Brockport and four tallies against St. Lawrence University. The offense will need to come alive against the strong Thoroughbred attack, as Skidmore comes into the weekend averaging over four goals per game.
A Look At The Thoroughbreds (8-3, 2-0 Liberty League)After some early season struggles against some very strong teams, the Thoroughbreds have settled into their schedule and have won three straight after a 2-1 road loss to No. 4 Middlebury College. Skidmore has historically been very strong at Wagner Park, going 69-5 overall since 2009 at home, including posting a 29-1 record against Liberty League opponents over that span. In fact, the Thoroughbreds have won 17 straight conference games at home with the last loss coming back on October 9, 2009 to St. Lawrence University. Skidmore enters this week's action with the country's 11
th best offense, averaging 4.09 goals per game while allowing on average one tally a contest. Skidmore leads the Liberty League in defensive saves with 10, and also paces the conference in save percentage with a .891 clip as well as scoring margin (3.09).
The attack for the Thoroughbreds runs through two-time All-American Dani DeGregory, who currently leads Division III field hockey in points per game with 3.91. The senior standout has posted 17 goals this season to go with a Liberty League-high nine assists. Her assists per game number of 0.82 are eighth-best nationally, and her 1.55 goals per game are fifth in the country. Teammate Gabby Hyman has scored 11 times this year, the fourth-most in the Liberty League, and Becca Halter has dished out six assists as well. Goalkeeper Zoe McGuire has allowed 1.05 goals against per game this year, third-lowest in the league while leading the conference in save percentage with a .908 save clip. In fact, McGuire is second in the nation in save percentage, while teammate Jenn Hanks has mad six defensive saves, second in the League.
Against Skidmore All-TimeThe Brewers are 6-24 all-time against the Thoroughbreds, which their last win coming back in 2013 in Poughkeepsie. Over the last two seasons, Vassar has played no team more often than Skidmore, taking on SC twice each campaign.
She's Our CaptainSenior
Lauren Wiebe (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker) comes into the week with 27 career goals, which is third all-time at Vassar, just three behind Ebony Boulware (1987-90) for second on the list. Wiebe also third all-time in points per game, as she is one of just three players with over a point per game at Vassar.
The Right PaigeFreshman keeper
Paige Amico (Carlsbad, CA/La Costa Canyon) currently sits 14
th in the nation in goals against average, allowing 0.92 goals per game so far this season. That number would be a school record if the season ended today.
Goals Are GoodThis year in victories, the Brewers are averaging 3.67 goals per game, a total of 33 in the nine wins for Vassar. In the three losses, VC has yet to score a goal.
In The CornerThe Brewers have earned more penalty corners then their opponents in all but two games this season, and for the season have a 135-47 edge in corners.
Getting Shots OffThis season, the Brewers have taken at least 10 shots in all 12 games. If VC finished the season that way, it would be the first time in school history Vassar has taken double digit shots in every game.
Make Her WorkThis season, Vassar College has been very strong at putting shots on cage, as evidenced by their 63.8 percent shot on goal clip. Junior
Hayley Beach (Latham, NY/Shaker) leads the team with 85.7 percent of her shots going on cage, while senior
Lauren Wiebe and sophomore
Storm Sideleau (Contoocook, NH/Kimball Union Academy) have posted 83.3 and 78.2 percent of their shots on goal, respectively.
Cornerstone ShuDefender
Lauren Shumate (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) has become one of the rocks of the defense for Vassar, as she has started the last 31 games for VC, the longest active streak of any Brewer. Monday night Shumate was drilled in the knee with a shot by a Rochester player, but shook it off to finish the game.
Home WarriorsThe Brewers have won 15 straight home games, which is second most in Division III. The Liberty League as a whole is tough to play on the road, as four conference teams are rank in the top 10 in the country for longest home win streaks. No other conference has more than one squad in the top 10.
Up NextThe Brewers continue their season-long three-game road trip with another Liberty League trip, heading to Union College Friday, October 23 at 4:30 p.m. for conference action in Schenectady, NY.
