Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 31, 2015) – Union College freshman guard Jenni Barra hit a three-pointer with 28 seconds to go to put the Dutchwomen up four, a lead that Union would hold onto as the Vassar College women's basketball team dropped a tough 51-44 Liberty League tilt Saturday afternoon in play from the Athletics and Fitness Center.
Barra, who scored a career-high 22 points on the afternoon, shook to her right and nailed a three from the right wing after VC junior guard
Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) had pulled Vassar to within one with 52 seconds to play. Union moved to 12-7 on the season and 6-5 in the conference with the win, while the Brewers dropped to 8-10 and 3-6 in the Liberty League.
The game was slow to get going, as the teams combined for 32 first-half points with Union taking a 19-13 lead into the break. After the intermission, Union continued to force Vassar to play from behind, holding onto its advantage until 5:57 left in regulation when freshman
Ariella Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA/Redwood) tied the game at 38 on a pair of free throws.
Vassar College earned its first lead of the second half moments later on an
Allyson Pemberton (Weston, MA/Weston) layup, but UC regained the advantage and led 42-40 with 2:31 to go in the game. Another Pemberton layup deadlocked the contest at 42, but Meghan Erdman hit a jumper 10 seconds later in the paint to give Union a slight edge. After Barra's three in the waning moments, VC turned the ball over on its next two possessions, helping the Dutchwomen earn the victory.
Drakeley finished the afternoon with 17 points, grabbing a team-high nine rebounds as well, while Pemberton totaled 14 points, two blocks and two steals. Rosenthal added eight points and five rebounds for Vassar, which shot 31.4 percent (16-51) from the floor on the afternoon. The Brewers dropped the rebounding battle for the second straight day, as Union outrebounded Vassar 45-41. The Brewers welcomed back nearly 20 alumni to the program Saturday afternoon, as many of them stuck around to support the squad after an alumni game in the morning.
Along with Barra, Union got nine points and eight rebounds from Kate Thompson along with eight points from Erdman. The Dutchwomen made just 28.6 percent (18-63) on the day, but made up for it with 20 offensive rebounds, also going 12-of-17 (70.6 percent) on attempts from the line.
The Brewers head to Troy, NY Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. to take on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in more Liberty League action.
