Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 20, 2014) – Five different Brewers recorded a goal, led by junior
Kamaria Coley's (Washington, DC/Acad. Of the Holy Cross) two scores, as Vassar secured a 6-0 victory over Manhattanville College Saturday afternoon. VC was firing on all cylinders throughout the game, producing a season-high 36 shots, which led to three goals in each half. The Brewers move to 5-2 on the year with the win, while Manhattanville falls to 1-6.
Senior
Chloe Wheeler (Thousand Oaks, CA/Westlake) got her team started in the 6
th minute, scoring on a nice ball played over the top from fellow senior
Sarah Bourenane (Carrollton, TX/Hebron). Wheeler collected the pass and shot past the keeper on the left side, scoring her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
In the 13
th minute, sophomore
Jordyn Matthews (Newton, MA/Newton North) tallied her first goal on the year after a header shot from freshman
Amanda McFarland (Redwood City, CA/Menlo) was saved in front of the goal. Matthews powered the rebound into the net, making it 2-0 Vassar with over 75 minutes on the clock.
McFarland delivered the final goal of the half on what was perhaps the most stylish finish in the game. McFarland worked down the right wing around a defender, before playing an arcing 30-yard shot from outside the box. The ball sailed over the keeper's head, and fit perfectly into the back left corner of the left to put the hosts up 3-0.
In the second half, junior
Lucy Brainerd (Littleton, CO/Heritage) saw her first shot of the season go over the goal line in the 53
rd minute. A beautifully timed cross from freshman
Katie Voegtlin (Fairfax Station, VA/Lake Braddock) on the left side found Brainerd open in the box, and she headed the ball into the left side of the net past the keeper putting the Brewers ahead 4-0.
Coley rounded out the scoring on the afternoon with the final two goals for Vassar. Her first came off a well-played ball from Wheeler in the 63
rd minute, which found Coley open on the left side of the box to power a shot in for her first goal of the year. Her second goal of the game came in the 84
th minute, after a hard shot from McFarland outside the box forced the Manhattanville keeper to make a diving save. The deflection went right to Coley, who finished into the net to give her side a decisive 6-0 victory.
The win marked the third straight shutout for the Brewers this season. Vassar will look to carry today's offensive momentum into its Liberty League opener next Saturday, September 27 when the team hosts Skidmore College at Gordon Field.
Note: With her goal today, senior Chloe Wheeler moved into a tie for fifth all-time in career goals with Andrea Johnston (1989-92).
