Box Score DANBURY, CT (September 17, 2014) – Sophomore defender
Sophie Arnold (Merion, PA/Lower Merion) tallied 4:58 into overtime Wednesday evening, lifting the Vassar College field hockey team to a dramatic 4-3 win in non-conference action.
On two occasions the host Colonials (4-2) came back from goal deficits Wednesday, but in each time the Brewers had an answer. In the opening period, visiting Vassar (6-1) got out to a quick lead, thanks to the first goal of the season from junior
Haley Merritt (Northport, NY/Northport). On the tally, Merritt finished off a nice penalty corner by lifting the ball over the diving keeper of WCSU.
VC doubled its lead not even four minutes later at 10:44, as sophomore
Hayley Beach (Latham, NY/Shaker) had her shot deflected in at the left post by
Flora Crichton-Smith (New York, NY/St. Mary's School) for her first collegiate tally. The Colonials would battle back though, posting two goals in the next 7:35 to knot the game at two.
After the break, junior
Lauren Wiebe (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker) converted her sixth goal of the season for Vassar, as Beach carried the ball into the circle and Wiebe was able to knock in the loose ball. West Conn wouldn't go away lightly, as the hosts forced overtime with 4:27 to play in regulation on a Caitlin Ogrizovich goal.
Early on in overtime, the Brewers would need its last line of defense to make a crucial save. Junior keeper
Amreen Bhasin (Cresskill, NJ/Riverdale) saw a shot off a penalty corner by the Colonials' Jenny Cappello, but Bhasin was there to deny the junior and keep the game going.
Later in the extra period, the Brewers used a great combination game-winner from a pair of roommates. Arnold dribbled the ball down the sideline, eventually passing the ball to Beach in a similar position. Arnold streaked for the stroke line, and was rewarded with a great pass from Beach. Arnold coolly collected the pass, gathered and pushed the shot past the keeper to her left for the game winner.
The victory for the Brewers was the second in the last three wins that has come in overtime, as VC knocked off Kean University 1-0 in overtime last week. The game was extremely close in many categories, as Vassar held a slight 16-14 advantage in shots, though 13 of VC's 16 came on cage with just six from the Colonials making the net.
Vassar College also won the penalty corner battle 13-10 on the night, and Bhasin made three stops in net for the Brewers. WCSU net minder Kristy Trotta made nine stops on the evening, and was aided by the two goals from Ogrizovich on offense.
The Brewers are back in action this Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. on Weinberg Field, hosting the Roadrunners of Ramapo College (1-6) for more non-league play.
