Brewer Baseball Ends Season With 8-1 Loss To Union In Liberty League Tournament

Box Score

LOUDONVILLE, NY (May 9, 2014) – The Vassar College baseball team finished one of its best seasons in program history Friday evening, falling to Liberty League Tournament host Union College 8-1 in action from Siena Field.

The Brewers end the year with a 19-14 record, posting the best winning percentage in program history this year. Vassar also tied the school record for wins in a season, despite losing 25 percent of the regular season due to wintry weather this spring. VC advanced to the Liberty League playoffs for the second time ever this season, and also picked up a tournament win for the second straight season.

Vassar got on the board first against Union, as freshman Brad Kendall (Redlands, CA/Redlands) scampered home on a wild pitch in the third to put the Brewers up 1-0. Union would respond an inning later with four runs, as David Peretti and Kent Curran each doubled in a run, while Jake Fishman capped the inning by stealing home.

The Dutchmen (24-10-1) added another run in the fifth inning on a Sam Caruso single, and posted three more in the seventh to pull away for the victory. Kendall finished the game 1-for-3 with the team's lone score, while four others added singles in the game for the Brewers.

Senior Joe Lovizio (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) finished his career with the Brewers with six innings of work, allowing three earned runs and seven hits. Freshman Mike Koscielniak (Crystal Lake, IL/Marian Central Catholic) and sophomore Jonathan Hong (Orinda, CA/Miramonte) each had scoreless outings for VC.

Vassar concluded the season with the most conference wins in program history with 13, and will most certainly do well in the All-Liberty League team announcements Monday morning.
