Box Score LOUDONVILLE, NY (May 8, 2014) – The Vassar College baseball team managed just four hits Thursday afternoon as top-seeded and host Union College knocked off the Brewers 8-1 in the opening round of the 2014 Liberty League Tournament, with games being played at Siena College.
The Brewers (18-13) couldn't get much going in terms of offense off of Union freshman hurler Jake Fishman, who allowed three hits over eight innings to earn his seventh win of the season. His counterpart, Vassar freshman
Adam Erkis (Villanova, PA/Radnor) was solid as well, holding Union off the board through the first five innings.
In the sixth, the Dutchmen (23-9-1) broke the scoreless tie as Joe Bradlee singled to left center, eventually scoring on a two-out RBI double by Logan Schulte. The big blow for the Brewer's chances came in the seventh inning, as UC posted five runs, with the Brewers committing three costly errors resulting in all five runs being unearned.
Vassar College plated a run in the top of the eighth as freshman
Brad Kendall (Redlands, CA/Redlands) doubled with one-out down the left field line. Sophomore
Brooks English (Milton, MA/Milton Academy) singled in Kendall to pull VC to within five, but two more runs in the bottom of the eighth by Union sealed the win for the hosts.
Erkis suffered his first collegiate loss Thursday, allowing three earned runs and 10 hits over 7.1 innings of work. Sophomore catcher
Cory Wuenschell (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) doubled and was 1-for-3 on the day, and
Brett Zaziski (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) had a single in the seventh to break up Fishman's no-hit bid.
The Brewers defense let them down though Thursday, committing five errors on the day. Vincent Esposito had two hits and two runs scored for the Dutchmen, while Anders Goetz had two hits as well. David Peretti drove in two runs, as did CJ Worley on a bunt in the seventh. Fishmen tossed 117 pitches while striking out eight for Union.
Vassar College will look to keep its season alive Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. against Clarkson University in a losers bracket game. The Golden Knights lost to the University of Rochester in the first game of the day 5-1, pushing the Yellowjackets through to Friday's winner's bracket game with Union.
