Brewer Pitchers Stifle Skidmore In 10-1 Liberty League Win Wednesday

Box Score

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (April 9, 2014) – Three Vassar College pitchers held host Skidmore College to just three hits as the Brewer baseball team earned a 10-1 Liberty League win Wednesday in action from the Castle Diamond.

Vassar College starter and freshman Adam Erkis (Villanova, PA/Radnor) was again fantastic, as he followed up his Liberty League Rookie of the Week performance last week with six strong innings Wednesday. Erkis surrendered just two hits and one earned run in moving his record to an unblemished 3-0 on the season.

Senior righty Dave Robbins (Rumson, NJ/Rumson Fair-Haven) worked two innings in relief, allowing one hit but fanning five of the six Thoroughbred (5-12, 0-6 Liberty League) hitters he faced. Sophomore Connor Cucalon (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius) worked a perfect ninth, striking out two of the three batters he saw.

The Brewer pitchers were sharp all night, but the Vassar offense gave them some cushion early. VC posted two runs in the top of the first inning, as Brooks English (Milton, MA/Milton Academy) chalked up two more two-out RBI. On the season, English now has 13 RBI with two men down, and is hitting 10-for-20 with two outs and runners in scoring position.

Vassar (7-4, 4-2 LL) tacked on four more runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead, with the Brewers earning five free passes in the frame, culminating in a Nick Johnson (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius) two-run single. Skidmore scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the second, but VC answered with a single tally in the fourth thanks to a RBI ground ball from senior Parker Werline (Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar).

In the fifth inning, Vassar College would blow the game open with three more runs, all with two out. Junior Kyle Casey (San Diego, CA/Vista) and Brett Zaziski (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) started the rally with back-to-back singles to put runners at first and third. Johnson followed with a RBI double to plate Casey, and English added another pair of two-out runs batted in with a single to center field.

That was all the Vassar pitching staff would need, retiring 15 of the final 18 batters to cruise to the win. Johnson posted his fifth consecutive multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and two walks, while English was 2-for-6 with four RBI. Casey added two hits and two runs, and Zaziski singled in his only official at-bat, walking four times while scoring the plate three times. On the evening, Vassar College drew 13 free passes, which is the most in a game in program history.

The Brewers will return home for a non-conference doubleheader with the No. 6 Red Dragons of Cortland State Saturday at noon on Prentiss Field.
