Baseball Battles Back For Twinbill Split With Clarkson Sunday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 6, 2014) – The hot bats of the Vassar College baseball team continued Sunday afternoon, posting 25 hits on the afternoon noon as the Brewers captured a doubleheader split with visiting Clarkson University from Prentiss Field. The Golden Knights captured the first game of the double-dip 8-4, but Vassar College came back to take the second contest of the day 6-4.

Game 1: Clarkson 8, Vassar 4: W, Jasek (2-1) – L, Lovizio (1-2)
The Vassar College baseball team led late, but a five-run sixth inning by the visiting Golden Knights of Clarkson lifted the visitors to the victory. The Brewers, serving as the visitors Sunday afternoon, got on the board first in the top of the second after Cory Wuenschell (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) singled in sophomore outfielder Nick Johnson (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius)

Clarkson responded in the bottom half with a run of its own, as Matt Jenack doubled in a run. Vassar scored another tally in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead, but CU followed with a pair of scores on a pair of RBI triples by John Coleman and Chris Miller.

Going along with the theme of the game, Vassar battled back in the top of the fourth with two of its own, as junior shortstop Jason Garfinkel (Encino, CA/Harvard-Westlake) connected on his first career homerun, a two-run blast, to put Vassar back ahead. Brewer starter Joe Lovizio (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) would hold Clarkson of the board over the next two frames, with VC clinging to a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.

The Golden Knights though would take the lead with their five scores in the sixth, as Tim Beninati had the big blow with a two-run triple to center field to give Clarkson the lead. The Brewers went 1-2-3 in the seventh, give Clarkson its third Liberty League of the season.

Freshman Brad Kendall (Redlands, CA/Redlands) posted his second straight multi-hit game with a pair of knocks, and Johnson and Brooks English (Milton, MA/Milton Academy) each were 2-for-3. Nine of Vassar's 10 hits in game one were singles, with Garfinkel's homer being the only extra-base hit of the game for VC. Lovizio struck out seven batters, taking the loss for VC.

Game 2: Vassar 6, Clarkson 4: W, Berg (2-0) – L, Roma (0-2)
The Brewer bats continued to sting the ball in the second game of the day, as Vassar connected for 15 hits, holding off Clarkson late for the conference victory. The key to the game for VC was its two-out hitting, going 9-of-16 with four RBI in the situation.

The Golden Knights had the first rally of the game, as Vassar starter Trent Berg (Milton, MA/Boston College) loaded the bases with a single and a pair of walks with one out. Berg worked out of the jam, inducing a infield pop out and ground out to end the threat.

Vassar (6-5, 3-2 Liberty) took the lead in the top of the third, as Garfinkel started the inning with a double off the right field wall. Kendall followed with a single, and junior Kyle Casey (San Diego, CA/Vista) scored Garfinkel with a single through the right side to put Vassar ahead 1-0.

In the next top half the Brewers doubled their lead, as Wuenschell and Parker Werline (Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar) posted back-to-back hits. Garfinkel looped a single over the second basemen's head to plate Wuenschell.

Vassar College scored two more in the fifth inning, as the rally started with two outs thanks to a double by Brett Zaziski (Randolph, NJ/Randolph). Johnson drove Zaziski in with a RBI double, and Johnson was plated by an English single to left field. The Brewers extended their lead out to 5-0 in the seventh inning, on back-to-back doubles by Zaziski and Johnson.

Clarkson (7-7, 3-3 Liberty) finally got to Berg in the seventh, as the freshman gave up two runs before exiting after tossing 114 pitches. Fellow newcomer Mike Koscielniak (Crystal Lake, IL/Marian Central Catholic) did a nice job, getting out of the bind with VC still leading 5-2.

Vassar got one run back in the ninth to make the score 6-2, and senior Dave Robbins (Rumson, NJ/Rumson Fair-Haven) came on to nail down the victory for the Brewers. Wuenschell was 4-for-5 in game two and had one of Vassar's seven doubles, while Johnson posted a pair of two-baggers to go with two RBI and two runs scored.

Kendall was 2-for-5, Zaziski added two doubles and two runs, and Garfinkel was 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. Berg tossed 6.2 innings of solid ball, allowing two earned runs on four hits, striking out four. Koscielniak worked 1.1 innings of relief, surrendering no runs or hits, allowing two to reach on free passes.
