Match ProgramPOUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 5, 2014) – The Vassar College women's tennis team continued the winning streak not only as a team, but also as individuals after defeating Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday morning at the Josselyn Tennis Courts.
Despite the 9-0 win over the #16 Northeast regionally-ranked Engineers (7-4, 0-2 Liberty League), the #10 regionally-ranked and #25 nationally-ranked Brewers (7-3, 3-1 Liberty League) were forced to never let up in three singles match and one doubles play.
"I'm so pleased with our continued improvement and fighting spirit in competition," said head coach
Kathy Campbell. "In matches where we were winning, we never let up. When we were down in a match, we came back to close it out in two sets. The entire team played well to win so decisively against a very solid RPI team."
Senior
Lindsay Kantor (Westhampton Beach, NY/Westhampton Beach) and sophomore
Lauren Stauffer (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) had to battle for the 8-5 win at No. 3 over Kelsey Ham and Amanda Alexander.
In singles, Kantor's first set at No. 4 against Alexander had to go to a tiebreaker and she was able to pick up the 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 win. Sophomore
Winnie Yeates (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman School) had a similar experience at No. 3 against Emily Laurillard. She won in a decisive second set, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2.
"Winnie was down a break in the first set and eventually broke back to even the set at 6-6. She won the tiebreak decisively (7-1) and kept the momentum through the second set winning 6-2," Campbell said. "She and Lindsay both kept the ball deep and utilized good court position to punish short balls."
Freshman
Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridge Sacred Heart) was the only Brewer to have to utilize a third set at No. 2 against Christina Ciamarra. She won the first set 6-4 but then Ciamarra took the second one 6-1. Hallewell clinched her win with a 10-7 third set claim.
After Vassar got the early 3-0 lead with doubles, Stauffer posted the Brewers' fourth match point with a 6-0, 6-1 No. 5 defeat of Pooja Ganesh, setting up junior
Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) to claim the match. Schapiro topped Casey Olsen at No. 1 6-0, 6-1.
"Both Lauren and Sam played exceptionally well with consistent, yet aggressive, play. They kept the ball deep with lots of varied spin and made a very high percentage of first serves," said head coach
Kathy Campbell.
The Brewers will next travel to Bryn Mawr, PA to start play in a championship that is embedded deeply in Vassar's history. They will play in the Seven Sisters Tennis Championships held at Bryn Mawr College where they will first do battle with Mount Holyoke College on Saturday, April 12 at 10:30 am. They then will take on Smith College later in the day before facing Bryn Mawr and #30 nationally-ranked Wellesley College on Sunday.
