Vassar Men’s Volleyball Finishes Season With Tri-Match Split Saturday

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 5, 2014) – The Vassar College men's volleyball team concluded its 2014 season Saturday afternoon, knocking off Brooklyn College in three games before finishing the tri-match with a four-set loss to Division I Rutgers-Newark in the third match of the day in action from Kenyon Hall. The Brewers knocked off the Bulldogs with scores of 25-13, 25-23 and 25-14, but were topped by the Scarlet Raiders with scores of 27-29, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-22. The Brewers finish the season with 10 wins, marking the seventh straight campaign with double-digit victories for Vassar.

Game 1: Vassar 3, Brooklyn 0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-14)
The Brewers honored senior Joe Pyne (Los Angeles, CA/Oakwood School) prior to the match, and he responded by posting a game-high 14 kills in helping Vassar to the win. The opening set saw VC bludgeon the volleyball, chalking up 12 kills and just one error on 23 attempts (.478), rolling to a quick 1-0 lead.

The second game featured 16 tie scores and three lead changes, as Brooklyn erased a four-point deficit at 19-15 to knot the match at 21. With the score deadlocking at 23, the Brewers would get back-to-back points to win the set, thanks to a kill and assisted block by sophomore middle Erik Halberg (Newark, DE/Salesianum).

Vassar never trailed in the final set as it bested its first-set hitting numbers, registering 14 kills on 23 swings, hitting at a .565 clip. The Brewers also posted a side-out percentage of 93 percent (14-15) in the final game, rolling to the sweep. Pyne accumulated his 14 kills on just 23 attempts, adding five digs, while sophomore Reno Kriz (Breinigsville, PA/Parkland) had six kills and two aces.

Junior Colin White-Dzuro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Royal St. George) had 25 assists, six digs and three assisted blocks, and Quinn Rutledge (Chesterfield, VA/Cosby) added six kills as well. Halberg finished with four kills and four assisted blocks, and fellow middle Christian Lizana (Dublin, PA/Pennridge) posted three kills and three rejections.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 3, Vassar 1 (27-29, 25-22, 25-19, 25-22)
Rutgers-Newark saw three players chalk up double-digit kill numbers Saturday, rallying to earn a four-set win after the Brewers earned the first game. The first set featured some of the most exciting volleyball you'll see, as the game featured 21 tie scores and nine lead changes. Down 27-26, the Brewers tied the match thanks to a service ace, and Kriz and Pyne provided back-to-back kills to put Vassar up 1-0.

The Scarlet Raiders (9-13) led by as much as four, but Vassar College fought back to pull to within one at 22-21. After the team's exchanged points, Rutgers-Newark posted two straight kills to even the match at one. The visitors swung at a solid .333 rate in the third set, earning a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the final game, Vassar College led in the early going but Rutgers-Newark stormed forward to hold the lead for most of the game. The Brewers rallied to make the score 23-22 in favor of their opposition, but RNU scored the final two points to pick up the win.

Pyne again had a game-high in kills for the Brewers, as he finished with 21 kills in the match, adding nine digs as well in his final collegiate match. Kriz posted 17 kills, and finished the year with the fifth-most terminations in a season ever with 424. White-Dzuro dished out 48 helpers, and Trey Cimorelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) ended his banner freshman season with 15 digs, ranking fourth on the single-season list with 332 on the year.

Lizana had six kills and five rejections in the middle for VC, while Kriz added six digs and six blocks against Rutgers-Newark. Halberg chalked up six kills and four blocks as well for Vassar, which hit .188 in the match.

Vassar College finishes the season with a 10-21 record, but is slated to return all but one of its letter winners in 2015.
